Acc.] 1569 [ANDREW SIMSON, M.A., vicar and exhorter at Bolton, supplied
Haddington during the vacancy.] 1570 JAMES CARMICHAEL, studied at St Leonard's
Coll., St Andrews, and graduated M.A. about 1564. Prior to July 1570 he was
master of the Grammar School at St Andrews. On 25th Aug. 1570 he was settled
in this charge. Presented to the vicarage of Nungate
2nd Nov. 1571. From 16th April 1572 to 15th Nov. 1576 he acted as
schoolmaster of the parish, but resigned at the latter date, the Town Council
having resolved (28th flay 1576) "that in no time coming should the
minister of the kirk be admitted schoolmaster of the burgh." In 1574 he
had also charge of Bolton, Athelstaneford, and St Martin's. He was one of a
committee of four who prepared the Acts of the Kirk for more general use, and
he assisted in the revision of publications, particularly the Second Book of Discipline. In
1584 he was compelled to take shelter in England, for being in sympathy with
the Ruthven Raiders. He returned in 1587.-[Reg. Min., Assig., and

trans. to Aberlady about 1587. - [Reg. Assig.] 1587 JAMES CARMICHAEL, M.A., above mentioned, returned; was engaged from
1592 to 1595 in abridging the Acts of Assembly; nom. constant Moderator of
Presb. by the Assembly 1606; died between 28th May and 24th Sept. 1628, aged
85. He marr. Violet, daugh. of Andrew Simson, min.
of Dalkeith (Reg. Sec. Sig., xlvi., 92; A. and D., cccxxxii.,
348), and had issue-Nathaniel; James, min. of Athelstaneford. Publications-

Scot., i.] 1647 ROBERT KER, bapt. 12th Nov. 1609, second son of John K., min. of
Prestonpans; educated at Univ. of Edinburgh; M.A. (25th July 1629); ord.
assistant and successor to his father 11th April 1638; pres. by John, Earl of
Haddington, in April 1646; trans. and adm. 21st April 1617; was a member of
the Commissions of Assembly 1647, 1648, and of the Commission for visiting
the Univ. of Edinburgh 1649; he did not conform, but was permitted to remain,
through the influence of John, Duke of Lauderdale; died 4th Feb. 1677. He
marr. Jean, daugh. of John Ramsay of Edington, and had issue Margaret; John;
William; George; Anna; Jean; Helen; Robert; all of whom died young. His widow
marr. Patrick Broun of Coalstoun-[Nicoll's
Diary, Kirkton's and Wodrow's Hists.; Acts Parl.,
vi., vii. ; Baillie's Lett., Monteith's Theater of
Mart.; Archaeol. Scot., i] 1678 JAMES FORMAN, M.A. (Edinburgh, 27th July 1663); licen. 6th Feb. 1666;
ord. to Middlebie 1666; trans. to Second Charge 20th April 1676 ; trans. and
adm. after 4th April 1678; died 3rd Dec. 1702, aged 59. He marr. Agnes,
daugh. of William Trent, min. of the Second Charge, and had issue-an only |
