1837 WILLIAM HARKESS, born at Mitchellslacks, Morton, 1801, son of William H., farmer, and Janet Walker, educated at the Univ. of Edinburgh; M.A. (31st March 1827); licen. by the Presb. of Dumfries 7th May 1833; tutor in the family of Sir .lames W. Moncreiff, Bart., pres. by the Commissioner for Sir John Hamilton Dalrymple, Bart., on the selection by the people from a leet of three; ord. 11th April 1830; died 2nd July 1811. He marr. 3rd Sept. 1840, Anne, daugh. of Hugh Rose, Governor of H.M. Prison, Edinburgh (who survived him, and marr. again, 11th April 1849), and had issue-a daughter, William Ann (posthumous), born 10th July 1841.

 

1843 THOMAS MUNR0, ord. 23rd June 1843 trans. to Campsie 28th March 1844.

1861 JOHN FERNIE THOMSON born Bal lindean, Kilmany, Fife, 10th May 1833, son of Arthur T., farmer, and Elizabeth Fernie; educated at St Andrews; classical master in Madras College; licen. by Presb. of Cupar 1855; assistant at Kilrenny; app. to Chapel of Howwood, Lochwinnoch, 1857; ord. to St Leonard's, Perth, 8th Oct. 1857; pres. by Mrs Ferguson Blair of Balthayock, and adm. 4th Oct. 1861; died 22nd July 1881. He marr. 3rd Nov. 1857, Jessie Wood M'Gowan, eldest daugh. of Alexander Fisher, Town-Clerk of Cupar-Fife, and had issue-Jessie Aitken Black, born 17th Sept. 1858, died 1st June 1883; Elrington Douglas, born 12th Feb. 1862, died 13th March 1863; Arthur William, born 10th April 1864; Elizabeth Fernie, born 18th Feb. 1867, died 10th Feb. l875; Jeanie

1882 JAMES HUNTER, born Airdrie, 2nd Sept. 1849, son of James Hunter, C.M, and Jean Rodger; educated at Gilbertfield, Hamilton, and Glasgow Univ.; licen. by Presb. of Glasgow April 1879; assistant at St Paul's, Leith, and Lady Yester's, Edinburgh; ord. 24th Jan. 1882. Marr. (1) 14th Aug. 1883, Clementina (died 31st Jan. 1900), daugh. of George Cowan, _M.D., Edinburgh, and had issue-James, -New Zealand, born 19th Nov. 1884; George Cowan Moffat, in Manila, born 17th Dec. 1885; William Henry Gray, in Melbourne, born 10th June 1887; Charles Cook, born 6th Feb. 1889; David Ainslie, born 25th Oct. 1890: (2) 23rd April 1901, Caroline Helen, daugh. of Edward James Parry, M.D., Shrewsbury. SOUTRA.

[The church was dedicated to the Holy Trinity, and was connected with the Trinity Hospital here, endowed by Malcolm IV. about 1164. Previous to the Reformation it was a benefice belonging to the Provostry of the Holy Trinity, Edinburgh. It was annexed to Fala in 1618.]

 

1560 THOMAS CAIRNS, was the last priest previous to the Reformation, and as he continued to 1567, he was probably the first Protestant min. In 1566 he was confirmed in certain lands known as Soutra Croft and Campiri Croft.

 

1567 JAMES -MURRAY, reader.

 

1567 WILLIAM FRANK, having Fala and Keith-Humbie also in charge; trans. to Lauder before 1574.-[Reg. Min., Chart. Coll. Ch. of Mid-Lothian.

 

1574 ALAN JOHNSTON. During his ministry Keith-Humbie was separated from Fala and Soutra, and Crichton was annexed in its place. He had three readers under him, and lived at Soutra.
