1761 WILLIAM DALGLEISH, born Galloway, 1733;
educated at Univ. of Edinburgh; licen. by Presb. of Edinburgh 26th
March 1760; pres. by William, Earl of March, 26th Nov. 1760; called
26th March 1761; ord. 2nd July 1761. A grass glebe having been designed
to him, an action of reduction was brought on the ground that it had
been feued out in small divisions to the inhabitants of the burgh
on the eve of the Reformation. The action was dismissed 23rd .June
1784; D.D. (Edinburgh, 20th Nov. 1786); chaplain to the Peeblesshire
Regiment of Volunteers; died 20th Sept. 1807. He marr. 7th July 1773,
Jean (born 19th Sept. 1748, died at Edinburgh, 7th Sept. 1819), daugh.
of William Gibson of Greenknowe. Publications-The
True Sonship of Christ Investigated (London, 1776). [This work was
animadverted on by the Rev. Adam Gib
in An Antidote against a New Heresy; concerning the trite Sonship
of Jesus Christ; as also an Appendix concerning tire Wonderful Theory
of Animalcular Generation, as lately brought in by a Clergyrnan of
the Church of Scotland. It was also attacked by the Rev. Michael Arthur,
min. of the Secession congregation, Peebles, in The Scripture Doctrine
of the Eternal Generation of Christ as the Son of God Vindicated,
etc.] In reply, Dalgleish published The Self existence and Supreme
Deity of Christ Defended (Edinburgh, 1777); Two single Sermons (Edinburgh,
1793, 1808); Sermons on the Chief Doctrines and Duties of the Christian
Religion, 2 vols. (Edinburgh, 1799-1807); Religion, its Importance

educated at Univ. of Glasgow.; M.A. (1808); tutor in the family of
Francis, Earl of Wemyss and March; licen. by Presb. of Haddington
20th Oct. 1812; pres. by the said Earl 31st March, and ord. 1st July
1813; res. on appointment as Prof. of Logic in the Univ. of Glasgow
6th Oct. 1824; Vice-Rector 1831-4; LL.D. (Glasgow 1869); died unmarr.
at Ardfillayne,
Dunoon, 2nd March 1873. Founder of the Buchanan Bursaries,-
familiarly known as "Logic Bob." Publications- Wallace,
a Tragedy (1856); fragments of the Table Round (1860); The Fore of
Glentreuil, arid other Poems (1862); Tragic
Dramas from Scottish History (1868); Canute's Birthday in Ireland, a Drama in Five Acts (1868).
His tragedy, Wallace, was performed twice for a charitable object
at the Prince's Theatre, Glasgow, in March 1862, the principal characters
being personated by students of the divinity and arts classes. -[Dict.
