8th Sept. 1659; settled as min. of Manor Oct. 1662; trans. to Govan Dec. 1663; trans. and adm. 20th June 1667; died before 4th Nov. 1690. He marr. Janet Carstairs (G. R. 1687 JAMES FEITHIE [FITHIE, FORTHIE], M.A. (Edinburgh, 9th July 1656); was a prisoner for holding conventicles, and ordered to be liberated from the Edinburgh Tolbooth 4th July 1679; became chaplain to the Trinity Hospital, Edinburgh; was again arrested and sent to the Bass, but allowed liberty to walk on the rock, with an allowance of eightpence a day, on account of his poverty, 19th Sept. 1685; released in March 1686 ; adm. to this charge 17th Nov. 1687; died 25th Dec. 1689, aged about 53. He marr. Elizabeth Reid, who survived him, and had issue-Elizabeth, served heir 3rd Nov. 1691 (marr., pro. 20th Nov. 1691, John Elliot, writer, Edinburgh Edin. 1690 ROBERT KNOX, M.A., formerly of Tron Parish, Glasgow; was pres. in 1690, but not settled (being an Episcopalian); he "continued to possess the Kirk by violence," and eventually withdrew, 24th July 1690. 1690.-Eillem. of Veitch.]
1690 WILLIAM VEITCH, M. A.; trans. from Whittonhall (Morebattle); adm. "parson of Peebles and Manor" 18th Sept. 1690, notwithstanding the opposition of James, Duke of Queensberry; a member of Assemblies 1690-2; after various harassing and vexatious proceedings, and receiving calls from Edinburgh and Paisley, |
was trans. to Dumfries 6th April 1694, leaving with regret the parish and surrounding country, to which he anxiously wished to return. He was refused the stipend during his incumbency, by the influence of his enemies and the decision of the Supreme Court; so that, including his law expenses, he lost above 10,000 merks-[Memoir, Hem. of Mrs P., Reg. and Acts of Ass.; Calamy's Acc., iv.; Rule's .Sec. Vindication.]
1694 [ALEXANDER ORROCK, min. of Hawick, was nominated by the heritors 17th Oct. 1694, and much delay was caused by the case coming before the Assembly, who set the call aside.]
1696 JAMES THOMSON, born 1646, son of David T., min. of Manor; ord. to Tweedsmuir 1688; called 13th Sept., trans. and adm. 25th Nov. 1696; died 29th Sept. 1712. He marr. 16th Oct. 1691, Susanna Carmichael, and had issue-Jean (marr. 26th Nov. 1732, James Veitch, younger, of Glen); Grizel; Isobel (Lanark Sas., xii., 55).-[St Cuthbert's Reg. (Marr.).]
1717 JOHN HAY (tertius), born 1680, son of Theodore H., vicar of Peebles 1676-89, and grand-nephew of John H. (secundus); licen. by Presb. of Haddington 27th June 1710; pres. by William, Earl of March, 25th March 1713. Opposed by the magistrates on account of his youth, he was not ord. till 26th June 1717; died at Marchfield, Edinburgh, 1st June 1760. He marr. (1) 7th Feb. 1718, Margaret, daugh. of Robert Brown of Walston, and had issue-William, licen. 21st April 1744, died 1st June 1745; Jean, died 10th July 1748; Margaret, died 28th Nov. 1744; Ann (marr. 1743, Peter Edgar of Bridgelands), died 1769; Isabel (marr., proc. 2nd Oct. 1748, Robert Brunton, merchant, Edinburgh), died 25th March 1751: (2) 9th June 1737, Henrietta Porteous of the Hawkshaw (Tweedsmuir) family, who died 31st March 1762.-[N.
