16th June, trans. and adm. 25th Nov. 1813. He adopted the teaching of
Campbell of Row, and Edward Irving, and in 1833 the Presb. reported to the
General Assembly that he "had given countenance to certain extraordinary
interruptions of public worship in his church on the Monday immediately after
the Communion, by a person [Thomas Carlyle, Edinburgh] pretending to speak in
the Spirit." The General Assembly expressed "their high
disapprobation of these disorders and irregularities," and remitted the
