PRESBYTERY OF JEDBURGH p. 502
1640. THOMAS ABERNETHIE, of honourable parentage, was long a soldier in Germany and was seduced to the Romish faith at Florence by an English Jesuit. After remaining in nine years, and pursuing his studies at Rome, he returned to Scotland, and was employed in Aberdeen, Elgin, Banff, and Caithness; at the latter place he resided chiefly with Lon Berrriedale, and travelled in a disguised habit as chamberlain and bailie of his lands, was six years under the training of a worthy minister, and abjuring Popery was received into communion 24th Aug. 1638, adm. 29th April 1640, and pres. by the Presb., jure devoluto, 30th Sept. following. 1677. MATTHEW EWING, A.M., had his degree from the Univ. of Glasgow 15th July 1673, pres. by Charles 11. 23 March; coll. 17th and inst. 23d May 1677; deprived by the Privy Council 4th Sept. 1689, for not reading the Proclamation of the Estates, and not praying for their majesties William and Mary; he was also accused of praying for King James.-[Mun. 1691. JOHN OVENS, A.M., was laureated at the Univ, of Edinburgh 17th April 1639, he was settled as min. at Stannerton, Northumberland, but deprived by the Act of Uniformity 24th Aug. 1662, after which he preached frequently in his own house, and at the houses of the neighbouring gentry. A fine was imposed on him for preaching at the house of a Mr Horsley, and on that account he was carried prisoner to Newcastle, and suffered from incivility and harshness, but was discharged on his friends tendering payment Offers were made to him of a settlement in Scotland by John, Duke of Lauderdale, then at the helm of affairs, which he respectfully declined, till solicited by Thomas, Lord Rutherford. When spent by age and infirmity, so that he could not be heard, he retired again to England, where he died after 6th April 1698.-[Reg. Laur. Univ. Edin., Presb. 1698. JOHN STORIE, A.M., was laureated at the Univ. of Edinburgh 13th July 1695, licen. by the Presb. of Kelso 3d June 1697, called in Oct. following, ord. (colleague and suc.) 6th April 1698; died 13th Aug. 1699, in his 29th year and 2d min.-(Edin. Grad., Presb. Reg., Tombst.]
