1765. JOHN RICCALTOUN, son of the preceding, licen. by the Presbyterian Class in Northumberland, 22d Feb. 1749, and sustained by the Presb. 6th March 1754, ord. by the Presbyterian Class of Newcastle 17th May 1755, as min. to the congregation of North Shields, which he left, the salary being reduced so low as sixteen pounds a year, became Chaplain at Caerlanrig, pres. by George III. 17th April, and adm. (assist. and suc.) 4th Dec. 1765; died 9th April 1800, in 45th min. He marr, 7th June 1780, Helen Irvine, who died 22d March 1827, and had two sons, John, preacher of the gospel, James Thomas, and a daughter.-Publications-Works of his father edited and published by him, Account of the Parish (Sinclair's St. Acc. iii.)-[Presb. 1800. BENJAMIN DICKISON, trans. from Kirktown, pres. by George III. 20th May, and a dm. 15th Oct.; died 20th March 1833, in his 7 9th year, and 46th min. 1834. JOHN EWEN, son of Mr E., skinner, Hawick, licen. by the Presb. 7th Aug. 1822, became assistant to the Rev. James Arkle, Hawick, refusing to accept of remuneration, he was employed as tutor to. several families in the county, subsequently travelling to the Continent as tutor, and latterly preceptor, to the only son of a gentleman in Yorkshire, pres. by William IV. in Sept. 1833, and ord. 27th June following; became Presb. Clerk. He marr. 2d June 1846, Isabella Yeaman, daugh. of Mr James Fitchie, manufacturer, Deanfield, Meigle, and has issue, two sons and two daughters.-Publication-Account of the Parish (New St. Acc. iii.) HOWNAM. The church previous to the Reformation belonged to the Abbey of Jedburgh. It was supplied by JOHN DAVIDSON, reader, from 1756 to 1758, and ANDREW HOPPRINGLE, or PRINGLE, 1579 and 1580.
