1609. THOMAS THOMSONE, A.M., trans. from Soutra, pres. to the Vicarage by James VI before 1st March, and inst. 28th April; died between 18th Jan. and 29th July 1626, age about 49, in 21st min.-[Reg. Pres., Sec. Sigill and Assig., Edin. Reg. (Bur).]

 

1626. WILLIAM WEIR, A.M., trans. from Southdean, pres. to the Vicarage by Charles 29th July, and adm. 25th Oct.; he was sick 24th Sept. 1651, and probably died. William Wilson, a grandchild, got charity from the Presb, of Kelso 2d June 1663.-(Presb., and Kelso Presb. Req., Reg. . .Sec. Sigill, and Pres., Mun. Univ. Glasg. iii.]

 

1652. JAMES DOUGLAS, A.M., son of D. of Bonjedburgh, had his degree from the Univ. of Edinburgh 15th April 1645, called 15th Feb., and adm. and inst. 15th Dec. 1652; died 29th May 1665, in 40th age, and 13th min. He had two sons, William succeeded to the lands of Newhall, and was served heir 16th Nov. 1669, and Robert entered prentice to James Brown, apothecary, Edinburgh, 1st Jan. 1679.-[Tombst., Edin. 1665. JOHN AINSLIE, A.M., was laureated at the Univ. of Edinburgh in 1659, passed trials before the Presb. 1st Feb. 1665, pres. by Charles 11. , coll. after 30th Aug., and inst. 2d Nov. same, year; trans. to Oxnam in 1682.-[Edin. Grad., Presb. Reg.]

 

1683. JOHN LIDDEL, A.M., attained his degree at the Univ. of Glasgow 16th July 1674, passed trials before that Presb. and got a testimonial 23d Feb. 1681 for licence, pres. by Charles II. 30th Sept. 1682, coll. --, and inst. 3d April thereafter; deprived by the Privy Council, 8th Sept. 1689, for not reading the Proclamation of the Estates, and not praying for their majesties William and Mary, and also accused of saying " he would never pray for them as long as his blood was warm." 1694. NICOL EDGAR, A.M., son to E. of Wedderlie, obtained his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh, licen. by the Presb. of Earlston, 9th Feb. 1693, called after 19th Aug., and ord. 28th Sept. 1694; died 31st May 1724, in his 67th year and 30th min. He marr. Susanna, daugh. of Mr John Vetch, min. of Westruther, she died 30th June 1713, aged 52, and had two daugh. Susanna and Elizabeth.-[Edin. Grad., Tombst., Presb., and Test. Reg. 1725. ROBERT RICCALTOUN, born in 1691, read the Bible distinctly before he was five years old, educated at the grammar-school Jedburgh, and afterwards at the Univ. of Edinburgh, but never attended any Divinity hall, licen. by the Presb. of Kelso 5th March 1717, called to Alertoun in 1718, became assistant to Mr Arch. Deans, min. of Bowden, and had a testimonial from the Presb. of Selkirk 3d Aug. 1725, showing he "had resided a considerable time in their bounds, and been very serviceable to the Presbytery," called by the Presb. jure devoluto 19th Aug., and ord. 24th Sept. same year; died 17th Sept. 1769, in 78th age and 44th min. He was a man of uncommon penetration and good taste, and, possessing a more than ordinary share of talent, he first appeared in the Marrow controversy, and produced the most able of the works in that violent but now almost forgotten dispute. Though an original, independent, and acute reasoner, he has been considered a divine of the Rutchinsonian school. A poem he had written on " Winter" gave the idea to the immortal author of the Seasons, and the friendship and patronage which he showed to him when young and unknown will ever hallow his
