He marr. 4th April 1798 Marion daugh. of the Rev. William Campbell, min. of Lilliesleaf, she died at Abbotshall 21st Nov. 1845, aged 63, and had Dr Robert, min. of Inchinnan.-Publications-Abridgement of the Acts of the Gen. JAMES ARKLE, trans. from Castletown, pres. by Henry, Duke of Buccleuch 5th Sept., at the solicitation of Mr Dewar of Vogrie, and adm. 19th Dec.; died 16th March 1823, in his 64th year, and 31st min.-Publications-Two single Sermons, Kelso, 1800, Hawick, 1806, 8vo.; Account of Castletown (Sinclair's St. Acc. xvi.)- [Presb. 1823. JOHN COCHRANE, licen. by the Presb. of Selkirk 6th Aug. 1811, became assistant to the Rev. James Stalker, min. of Lilliesleaf, and subsequently min. to the Presbyterian congregation at Falstone, afterwards to that of North Shields, pres. by the curators of Walter Francis, Duke of Buccleuch and Queensberry 4th June, and adm. 12th Sept. 1823; died 12th Sept. 1832, in 43d age. He marr. 30th July 1816 Jessie E., daugh. of Mr Thomas Knox, an extensive pastoral farmer in Roxburgh and Selkirkshires.-[Presb. Reg., Knox's Poems, New St. Acc. iii., &c.]

 

1833. JOHN AIKMAN WALLACE, trans. from Burntisland, pres. by Walter Francis, Duke of Buccleuch and Queensberry, in March, and adm. 10th May, he was pres. to Galashiels by Hugh Scott, Esq. of Gala, in Dec. 1840, but his translation was refused by the Presb. in the Feb. following. On joining in the Free Secession, and signing the deed of Demission, he was declared no longer a min. of this Church 20th June 1843. HOBKIRK, PROPERLY HOPEKIRK.

The church, previous to the Reformation, belonged to the Abbey of Jedburgh. A pres. to the vicarage was made by James VI. to JOHN DOUGLAS, 21st March 1576.

 

1608. GEORGE DOUGLAS, A.M., trans. from Southdean; he had been Ares. to the Vicarage by James VI. 29th May 1602, and had also a tak from his majesty of the kirk-lands, "callit the Vicarie-hill," &c., for lyff, and next successor, for iij li vj s viij d. He died between 4th Jan. and 19th April 1609, aged about 30.-[Reg. Assig., and Pres., Presb. Reg.]
