1712. ROBERT CUNINGHAME, A.M., trans. from Wilton, called 8th Nov. 1711, and adm. 4th June following; he went to Cornwall for his health in July 1721, but died 5th Aug. 1722, aged about 54, in 29th min. He joined his predecessor in a protest against the Synod in April 1703. He marr. Marjory Ker, and had Robert, Alexander, and Janet who marr. 1723. CHARLES TELFER A.M., son of Charles T., one of the magistrates of Edinburgh, and Captain of the Trained Band, acquired his degree at the Univ. there 17th April 1712, licen. by that Presb. (after scrupling to sign the Confession of Faith, which he at length did, seeing he could not otherwise be licensed) 3d June 1 719, entered as assistant to the preceding 10th Sept. 1721, was Ares. by Anne Duchess of Buccleuch in Nov. 1722, and ord. 18th Jan. thereafter. He preached before the Lord High Commissioner by appointment of the Assembly 24th May 1730, from Eccl. vii. 10, and was called before the Committee of Overtures next day for certain comparisons which he had used, but was dismissed without censure, and died between 24th June and 7th July 1731, aged about 38, in 9th min. He is said to have been one of a club of young divines, who were unfavourable to signing the Confession of Faith: and though his sermons were original, it was alleged that he borrowed largely from Shaftsbury’s Characterics, and other British Essayists, while he was of an ascetic temper, and had no inconsiderable opinion of himself. 1732. WILLIAM SOMERVEL, A.M., son of Mr Thomas S., min. of Cavers, attained his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh 9th April 1707, became tutor in the family of Alexander, Lord Elibank, was resident in Dalkeith, and licen. by the Presb. of Dunse 6th Oct. 1719, called 17th Nov. 1731, and ord. 29th March following; died 8th Feb. 1757, in his 66th year, and 25th min. He marr. 1st, in March 1732 Janet only child of Mr John Grierson, min. of Queensferry she died 10th June 1749, and had a son Thomas, min. of Jedburgh; 2dly, 16th July 1753 Isobel Scott, of Whitehaugh, who died 1st May 1759, aged 86.-[Edin. 1757. JAMES LAURIE, A.M., trans. from Langton,. pres. by the factors in loco tutoris to Henry, Duke of Buccleuch 11th May, and adm. 7th Oct.; died 23d Dec. 1783, aged about 79, in 50th min.; "as a companion he was very amusing by the relation of fictitious stories." He marr. 31st July 1743 Elizabeth Foggo, who died 22d March 1792, and had a son John, min. of Ewes.-[Presb. Reg., New St. Acc. iii., Carlyle's Autob., &c.]
