min. Although the living only amounted to about thirty-four pounds, yet such were his primitive habits that he is said to have saved fifty pounds in the first year of his incumbency. 1813. james HOPE SIBBALD, eldest son of the Rev. Dr. S., Haddington, studied at the Univ. of Edin., licen. by the Presb. of Haddington 20th Oct. 1812, pres. by James Watson, Esq., of Saughton in July, and ord. 23d Sept 1813; died 3d March 1853, in his 66th year and 40th min. He marr., 9th June 1847, Margaret Anderson, of the par. of Longformacus, —Publication—Account of the Parish (New St. Acc. ii.)— [Presb. Reg., &c.]

 

ECCLES.

The church was dedicated to St. Cuthbert, and previous to the Reformation belonged to the Bernardine nunnery at Eccles. The parish was supplied by william cowtis, reader 1574-1576, and by william murray, 1576-1580.

 

1567. robert franche, having a stipend of Ixxx merks, to which xx was added at Lammas 1571, pres. to the vicarage of Greenlaw by James VI. 23d April 1573; trans, to Home about 1574, but returned in 1596, and continued in 1601.—[Reg. Min., Pres., and Assig.]

 

1607james frenche, A.M., trans, from Home, having Home and Stitchell also in charge; but returned to Home next year.—[Reg. Assig.]

 

[MR. william WEMYSS was appointed to be inaugurated 3d March 1607, it was reported next day, however, that he was not admitted, “be ressioun that the parochineris withstood his admission."—Jedburgh Presb. Reg.]

 

1608.   alexander home, pres. to the vicarage by James VI. 21st March 1609; trans, to Ayton in 1617.—[Beg. Assig., and Pres., Kelso Presb. .Reg.]

 

1622. david home, is mentioned as late min. 17th Sept., he had a son, Alexander.—[Reg. Sec. Sigill ]

 

1622. andrew melvill, A.M., was graduated at the Univ. of St. Andrews in 1616, demitted previous to 22d Oct. 1622, and perhaps went to Banchory-Devinick.—[Act Rect. Univ. St. And., Reg. Pres.]

 

1622. henry blyth, A.M., formerly of Holyrood house, pres. by James VI. 22d Oct.; and again by Charles I. 29th June 1633, at which period the parish contained between twelve and thirteen hundred communicants; he died at Edinburgh in Feb. 1635, aged about 62, in 42d min. His librarie was valued at vc merks (Four Hundred Pounds) by the airschip, and the utencils at ijc merks (Two Hundred Pounds). Two male and three female servants had for their years fie lii Ii vjs. viijd (Fifty Two pounds Six Shillings and Eight Pence), the Frie geir, d.d., amounted to ijm vc xiij Ii vjs. viijd (Two Thousand Five Hundred and Thirteen Pounds, Six Shillings and Eight pence). Though he had come under the displeasure of the court party in his former charge, yet he was a modest and inoffensive man, who had such an antipathy against a Ham that no sooner did he hear the word mentioned than he fainted. He marr. Agnes Hart, who died 9th March 1649, and had John, min. of Ochiltree, Heleine Elizabeth, Agnes, Christian, and Henrie.—{Reg. Sec.
