1588. ADAM DOUGLASS A.M., son of William D., attained his degree at the Univ. of St Andrews in 1582; Eckford was also under his care; he was Ares. to Zetham by James VI. before 15th May 1594, but died here in Dec. 1604, aged about 43. His haill library was estimat to xxvj 1i, one doz. silver spoons xl merkis, the abulziements of his bodie x li, Inventar and dettis ixc xviii li. 1606. DAVID CALDERWOOD, A.M., born about 1575, was laureated at the Univ. of Edinburgh, under the regency of Ferme,12th Aug.1593,probably adm. in 1605, fie was appointed 20th Nov. 1606 "to teiche the commoune head whidder thair sould be bischoipes in the kirk as that name and office is usit of lait, or not." With two others fie declined, 5th May 1608, the authority of the Visitor appointed by the Assembly 1602, who had come to visit this, and the neighbouring presbyteries, and to over-ride the election of commissioners to the succeeding General Assembly, for which Calderwood, the same evening, was put to the horn. Through the solicitation of Mark, Earl of Lothian, his punishment was only confinement to his parish. To him and others in similar circumstances, by Proclamation 9th Feb. 1613, a condition was affixed of "hereafter carrying themselves in dutiful obedience to his Majesty." He signed the Protestation in behalf of the Liberties of the Kirk 27th June 1617, was deprived by the Court of High Commission 12th July following, imprisoned in 8t Andrews, and subsequently in Edinburgh, until fie found caution to depart furth of the realm, when fie was liberated 28th of said month. He remained in hiding in the city, and at Cranatoun, however, till fie embarked for Holland 27th Aug. 1619, where he had a severe illness about 1623. He returned to Scotland in 1624, remaining almost unknown till 1638, when fie was singularly useful by his services to the Moderator and Clerk of the General Assembly. He was the first on the list recommended by that venerable body for supplying their numerous vacancies, and was adm. to Pencaitland in 1641.-[Reg. Laur Univ. Edin., Assig., Sec. 1621. THOMAS WILKIE, probably son of Mr Thomas W., min. of Lilliesleaf, but styled by Principal Strang, as one of his executors, " my brother," acquired his degree at the Univ. of St Andrews in 1614, pres. by James VI. 30th Jan., and adm. before 28th Sept. 1621. He was a member of the Assembly 1638, as well as those of 1644, 1646, 1648, and was appointed to attend the Earl of Lothian's regiment in 1645. He died between 14th Oct. 1657 and 6th April 1658, aged about 66, in 37th min., leaving a widow, and children. His son Mr John was served heir 3d- July 1666, and 15th Dec. 1674.-[Act. Rect. Univ.
