BEDRULE.

It was supplied by JOHN TURNBULL, reader from 1576 to 1578, and by GEORGE TURNBULL 1579 and 1580.

 

1585. ALEXANDER TAIT, Vicar-pensioner, and Reader at Traquair 1567-1580; deprived, and resided afterward at St Bride's Kirk (Traquair), was ordained to demit this charge 6th April 1591, and is still mentioned 7th Oct. 1595.---[Reg. Min., and Assig., Edin. Presb. Reg., Wodrow Miscell., Philiphaugh Writs.]

 

1599. WILLIAM GALBREITH, formerly at Penicuik; he had a son John.-[Reg. Assig., Edin. Reg. (Bapt.).]

 

1601. JOSEPH TENNENT, A.M., trans. from Traquair; removed to Abbotrule in 1605, if he did not hold it in conjunction, but returned in 1608, was again settled there, and returned a second time, " sett a tack of the teandes to Mr James Lausone, of Cairnemure, for his lyff-time, the lyfe-tyme of four several aires, and fyve nineteen zeirs thairefter," 27th July 1632, (which was rectified by Parliament 17th Nov. 1641); he continued 21st Nov., but died before 11th May 1633, aged about 58. His brother John of Cairnes, was served heir to a tenement in Edinburgh, and also to the lands of Listounschellis.-[Reg. Assig., Presb. Reg., Inq. Ret. 1633. DAVID FOULIS, pres. by John, Lord Stewart of Traquair in May, and adm. 30th Oct.; trans. to Oxnam in 1634.-[Presb. Reg., Sinclair's xv., and New St. Acc. iii.]

 

1635. HENRY PEIRSONE, A.M., attained his degree at the Univ. of St Andrews in 1619, inst. in Sept.; deposed in Jan. 1639, he petitioned the Assembly, who 29th Aug., remitted him to the Synod. He died before 26th Jan. 1654, aged about 54. The Inventar and debts amounted to jm vc lxxviij li vij s x d; a brother James being executor.-[Presb., and Test. Reg., Act. Rect. Univ. 1640. HAIRIE ELLOT, son of William E., Provost of Peebles, a cadet of the family of Stobbs, was laureated at the Univ, of Edinburgh 23d July 1631, pres. by the Presb. jure devoluto 11th Dec. 1639, coll. , and adm. and inst. 3d June following; died between 22d June and 10th Aug. 1653, aged about 42, in 14th min. Elizabeth Dowglas, relict, and seven children, petitioned Parliament in 1662, shewing he "suffered so much persecution and affliction for maintaining and defending his Majesty's interest and prerogatives in the pulpit both at home and abroad, publickly praying for and maintaining his Majesty's forces at the expedition 1648, that he was driven from his charge, and lived in a most dejected, miserable, sad, and downcast condition, and that had it not been the charity of some faithful, loyal, and well-wishing Christians they had quite famished and been never able to have subsisted." On the report o€ a committee, the Parliament, 8th July, allowed Y.100 sterl. out of the vacant stipends.-[Reg. Laur. Univ. Edin., Presb. 1658. HEW SCOTT, A.M., acquired his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh 26th July 1649, called 22d Nov. 1657, and adm. 17th March thereafter; deprived by the Acts of Parliament
