PRESBYTERY OF JEDBURGH p. 486

 

adm. 26th Sept. 1791; had D.D. from the Univ. of Glasg. in May 1810, and died 12th Feb. 1832, in 45th min. He marr. 22d April 1795, Mary, daugh. of Mr John Hunter, min. of Stonykirk, she died 9th April 1810, and had George, John, Chief Registrar in the Court of Bankruptcy, Dr Arch. Blair, min. of Kilwinning, and several daugh., one of whom marr. the Rev. Samuel Cowan, Kelton, and another the Rev. James Robb Grant, Buittle, and a third Dr. Dunlop, R.N.-[Weekly Mag. xlviii., Presb. Reg., &c.]

LANGNEWTON

Previous to the Reformation the church belonged to the Abbey of Jedburgh. It was supplied by EDWARD DICKSON, reader, in 1574, by JAMES JOHNSTOUN from 1576 to 1580, and by ROBERT HAMILTON 1585 and 1586. The parish formed part of the Presb. of Melrose, and was suppressed and annexed to Ancrum 6th Feb. 1684.

 

1593. PATRICK URQUHART, A.M., was laureated at the Univ. of Edinburgh 12th Aug. 1591, be continued in 1601, when Lindean was also in the charge, to which he was shortly after translated.-[Reg. Laur, Univ. Edin., and Assig.]

 

1607. JOHN JOHNSTOUN, A.M., formerly of Nisbet, before 6th Jan.; died between 22d and 29th Dec. following.--[Presb. Reg.]

 

1609. JAMES ROBERTSONE, adm. 19th April; desired transportation 12th Nov. 1616, in respect of his " mean provision and uncertaintie of the same," which the Presb. could not give " without advyss of the Synod, meantime thei cannot refuse ane testimonial of his honest and guid behaviour amang them since he came ;" trans. to Cranston 1617.-[Presb., and Dalkeith Presb. Reg.]

 

1617. WILLIAM JAMESONE, A.M., studied and attained his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh 31st July 1613, adm. (at Peebles) 29th April 1617; he was one of fifty-five ministers who signed a Protest in behalf of the Liberties of the Kirk 27th June after, was a member of the Gen. 1642. JOHN COLT, licen. by the Presb. of Dalkeith 22d Oct. 1635, and afterwards residing in that of Haddington, adm. between 25th Jan. and 8th Feb. 1642; conformed to Episcopacy, and continued 1st Feb. 1665. A daugh. Rebecca received from the Kirk Session of South Leith 7th Dec. 1688 xviij s.-[Presb., Jedburgh, Haddingt. and Kelso Presb., and S. Leith Sess.
