SECOND CHARGE.

1601. JOHN BOYLE, A.M., was laureated at the Univ. of Edinburgh 28th July 1596. Though blind and discharged by the General Assembly 19th March 1600 from discharging any part of the pastoral office except preaching, yet he was adm. in 1601, and was appointed, with his co-presbyter Calderwood, to deal with the Lords of the Plat for stipends to the Abbacie-kirks of Jedburgh, to the effect "thei may be plantit, and ane secund min. appointit to Jedburgh." He was pres. by James VI. to the Vicarage of Eckford 13th March 1605, and to the Vicarage of Hounam 22d July thereafter, but was still on the Register here, and with two others declined the authority of the Visitor (Law, who had been appointed by the Assembly 1602), for which he wa.s put to the horn. ANCRUM.

Previous to the Reformation was a Prebend of Glasgow. The parish was supplied by Mr WILLIAM JOHNESTOUE, reader, deposed Nov. 1572.

 

1572. GEORGE JOHNSTOUN, trans. from Foulden, entered in Nov., with a stipend of xl merkis. In 1574 Auld Roxburgh, Ekfurde, Bedroule, and Abbotrule were also in the charge with lxxx Ii. stipend. He complained to the Assembly 1578 that another had been collated to his benefice, and he attended the Assemblies 1581, 1589. In 1585 he, with others, refused to subscribe the articles and injunctions drawn by Sir John Maitland, Secretary of State, he was trans. to Crailing before 1586, but returned after 28th May 1588. In 1608 with two others he declined the authority of a Visitor, (appointed by the Assembly 1602), was put to the horn, and deprived by the court of High Commission 29th June 1622, for not conforming himself to the Articles of the Assembly 1618, especially for not preaching on the days appointed by said Assembly, nor ministering the Sacraments according to the order prescribed; and was ordained to enter into ward in Annandale, when in his 73d year, and 50th min. 1578. HECTOR DOUGLASS, pres. by , and coll. by James, Archbishop of Glasgow before 24th April, when a complaint was made to the Assembly. In Oct. succeeding alter " being examined by certain of the brethren upon the rudiments of religion, and found rude therein; as also in respect of his not compearing as was appointed, the Assembly deprivit him from his office and functioun of the ministry as voundit and vnabill therefor." 1622. WILLIAM BENNETT, A.M., was laureated at the Univ. of Edin. 30th July 1614, pres. by James VI. 25th July 1622. He was a member of the Commission for maintaining Church discipline, 21st Oct. 1634, about which time he gave xl li towards erecting the Librarie in the Univ. of Glasgow. Having purchased an estate, he exercised his privilege as a freeholder by voting for a commissioner from the county to the Convention, the General Assembly, l0th Aug. 1643, found these powers incompatible with the ministry, and recommended him to ab-
