After an absence of upwards of two years, the Assembly, 26th June 1566, ordained his repentance to be made in the following manner: " The said Paul upon the two preaching dayes betwixt the Sondayes sall come to the kirk-doore of Edinburgh, when the second bell rings, clad in sackelcloth, buire-heidit, and haire-footit, and there remaine whill (until) he be brocht in to the sermoun, and placeit in the publick spectakill (stool of repentance) above the peiple in tyme of every sermon the said two dayes, and the Sonday therafter sall compeir in lyke manner, and in the end of the sermon declare signes of his inwerd repentance to the peiple, humblie requyreing the Kirk's forgivenes; whilk done he sal be clad in his awin apparrell, and receivit in the society of the Kirk; this same ordour to be observit in Dundie and Jedbrucht."
