PRESBYTERY OF KELSO p. 476

 

YETHOLM.

Previous to the Reformation, the church belonged to the Abbey of Kelso. It was supplied by JAMES WILLIAMSON, reader, in 1567, by THOMAS TURNET in 1574, and WILLIAM TAIT 1576 to 1580. It was afterwards conjoined with Mow and other parishes.

 

1579. THOMAS AITKIN, trans. from Ednam, he had been pres. by James VI. 8th Feb. 1577; continued in 1585, but was deprived.-[Reg. Assig., and Pres.]

 

1595. JOHN MACCULLOCH, A.M., trans. from Broughton, continued in 1596.-[Reg. Assig.]

 

1604. JOHN BALFOUR, A.M., attained his degree at the Univ. of St Andrews in 1591, elected one of the Masters of the High School, Edinburgh, 18th May 1597, which he resigned 7th .Jan. 1598, pres. by James VI. 24th March 1604, and also to Mow 2d Jan. 1607; he was one of fifty-five who signed a protestation to the King and Parliament for the liberties of the Kirk 24th June 1617; died between 27th Aug. 1633 and 18th Feb. 1634. 1634. FRANCIS HERVIE, A.M., trans. from Chanonry, pros. by Charles I. 18th Feb. He gave x Ii. toward building the Librarie of the Univ. of Glasgow 25th May 1636, bad a process raised against him in 1638 for celebrating an irregular marriage between a son of Patrick, Archbishop of Glasgow, and a daugh. of William, Lord Blantyre; was deposed before 16th July 1639, for erecting an altar with rails, beating violently one of his parishioners, contempt of the Presb., and declining the Gen. Assembly 1638. He was ordered by the Committee of Estates to remove out of his Majesty's dominions, and therefore solicited " ane pass for himself, wife, and children to that effect," which the Estates granted 13th Jan. 1645, " conform to the act of the Committee, either by sea or land, as occasion may best offer, without trouble or impediment to them thereanent."-[Reg. 1639. JOHN DOUGLAS, A.M., brother to the laird of Bonjedward, was laureated at the Univ. of Edinburgh 23d July 1635, got a testimonial from the Presb. of Jedburgh 22d Aug. 1638, pros. by Francis, Earl of Buccleuch, and his tutors in Feb. 1639, and by William, Earl of Lothian same month, ord. 23d April following, and inst. soon after; he was a member of the Commission of Assembly 1649, and trans. to Crailing 2d April 1661.-[Reg. 1662. JOHN CLAPPERTON, A.M., studied and was graduated at the Univ. of Edinburgh in July 1642; having been pres. to Yarrow, he demitted 13th Feb. 1666.-[Edin. Grad., Presb. Reg., Wodrow's Hist.]

 

1666. JAMES GLADSTAINS, A.M., trans. from Graitney, appointed by Alexander, Archbishop of Glasgow 13th March to exorcise the ministry till it be ascertained who is patron, (it being debated between William, Earl of Lothian and the laird of Niddry), coll. before 4th, and inst. 25th Sept. thereafter; deprived by the Privy Council 12th Sept. 1689, for not reading the Proclamation of the Estates, not praying for their majesties William and Mary, but for James
