PRESBYTERY OF KELSO p. 470
1641. WILLIAM WEMYSS, A.M., son of Mr William above mentioned, attained his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh 21st July 1632, pres. by Robert, Earl of Roxburgh , and ord. 23d March 1641; attended the Earl of Roxburgh's regiment in England; died 17th March 1658, in 52d age, and 17th min., leaving Elisabeth Moir, widow.-[Reg. Laur. Univ. Edin., Presb. Reg., Tombst, &c.]
1660. JOHN HALYBURTON, A.M., acquired his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh 15th July 1641; he must have been deprived of licence as the Presb. of Edinburgh, after a long process 19th May 1653 "found that his levitie and light carriage with a young woman has hein the onlie arryse and ground of scandall," on which he was restored 14th June 1654; he became chaplain to William, Earl of Roxburgh, was called 22d Aug. 1658, and adm. 13th June 1660. He petitioned Parliament showing he had suffered for his accession to the Engagement in 1648, had been debarred from exercising his ministry until 1655, and praying them to confirm a resolution of the Presb., allowing him the stipend from the date of the call, when an Act was passed 3d April 1661 granting the same. Conforming to Episcopacy he was pres. by, coll. , and inst. (alter 6th) Dec. 1664; died between 7th Nov. 1671 and 6th Feb. 1672. He marr. 2d April 1663 Margaret Haliburton, and had a daugh. Marion.-[Reg. Laur. Univ. Edin., Acts Part. vii., Presb., Test., Edin. Gen. Sess. and Reg. (Marr.).]
1673. JOHN DALGLEISH, A.M., son of Mr William D., min. of Cramond, studied at St Salvator's College, St Andrews, and took his degree in 1662, and his course of divinity at St. Mary's College there, was impowered (licen.) to preach 9th Sept. 1667, became chaplain to William, Earl of Roxburgh, by whom he was pres. in March 1672, ord. by Robert, Archbishop of Glasgow, with the Presb. 26th March 1673. The benefice being too small he was obliged to follow another employment, and leave his cure, much regretted by the people.[Inq. Ret. Gen. 5933, Act Rect. Univ. St And. Presb. and Dunbar Presb. Reg.]
1683. JOHN KER, A.M., obtained his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh 17th Dec. 1674, coll. before 3d, and inst. 10th April 1683. He was accused before the Privy Council 26th Sept. 1689 of not reading the Proclamation to the end, but only a part thereof, and mincing the same, and not praying for their majesties William and Mary, and praying for James VIL, that God would confound his enemies; but he was acquitted, these being found not proven.-[Presb. Reg., MS. Ace. of Min. 1689, Peterkin's Constitution. of the Church.]
1690. JOHN DALGLEISH, A.M., trans. from Queensferry; trans. to Old Machar in 1696, which was rescinded, and he was continued, on account of infirmity, 10th Jan. 1698, but trans. to Dundee in 1700.-[Presb. Reg., Acts of Ass. 1698, Sinclair's St. Acc. xix.]
1702. ROBERT BROUNE, A.M., trans. from Colvend, called in 1701, adm. 23d July 1702; deposed 14th Aug. 1717, for disaffection to the government. The charge of disloyalty is said to have arisen from drinking the Pretender's health at Kelso, in company with the rebel army, doing so from no ill intention, but simply to please Mackintosh, the commander, and thus recover a horse which his soldiers had stolen from him. By the compassion and humanity of the Countess of Roxburghe he was provided with a cottage at Cessford where he employed himself in tending his cow, and labouring his garden. He possessed neither shining abilities, nor the caution and prudence necessary for guiding him safely in a political age.-[Presb. Reg., Acts of Ass. 1717, 1723, Sinclair's St. Acc. xix.] |
