GAVIN WALLACE, licen. by the Presbyterian Class in Northumberland, and ord. by them, 14th March 1781, as min. to the congregation at Lowick, pres. by George III. 8th May, and adm. 19th Sept. 1793; died 19th Jan. 1834, in his 84th year, and 53d min. He married and had issue, Ebenezer Bradshaw, min. of Barr, and a daugh. Hannah G.-[Presb. Reg., &c.]
1832. JOHN GIFFORD, licen. by the Presb. of Stranraer 9th Aug. 1820, pres. by William IV. in Aug., and ord. (assist. and succ) 2d Oct. 1832; died suddenly 28th June 1854, in 22d min. He marr. ROXBURGH. The church was dedicated to St James, and previous to the Reformation belonged to the Abbey of Kelso. It was a Prebend of Glasgow.
1579. JAMES BETOUN, formerly of Glencairn, Ares. by James VI. 22d Oct. He was a member of the Gen. Assembly, 1606, which nominated the constant Moderators, and was then styled "old," but still continued in 160 7 . He purchased from his brother Robert the estate of Criech, Fifesh., and marr. 1st, after 1573 Helen Leslie "gudwyf of Kynnarde," who had been twice marr. before, and died in June 1577; 2dly, Issobel Gilry, who died 20th Jan. 1600; 3dly, Margaret eldest daugh. of David Wemyss of that ilk, by whom he had a son that succeeded to the property, besides three other sons, and three daugh.-[Reg. 1608. WILLIAM WEMYSS, was appointed by the Presb. (of Jedburgh) to be inaugurated (ordained) at Eccles 3d March 1607, it not having been done "be ressoun that the parochineris withstood his admission." He was adm. here after 4th Oct. 1608, and was one of fifty-five min. who signed a Protestation to the King and Parliament for the Liberties of the Kirk 27th June 1617; continued 7th Oct. 1634. 1635. WILLIAM ROLLOCK, A.M., was laureated at the Univ. of Edinburgh 26th July 1634, he gave xx li. towards erecting the Library of the Univ. of Glasgow in 1636, was deposed before 22d Oct. 1639, and left the country before 5th May 1640.
