Seafield, Lord High Chancellor, and raised a process for wrongous imprisonment before the Lords of Session, who assoilzied the Magistrates 5th January 17 04. He appealed to Parliament, but further proceedings do not appear. He subsequently removed to Edinburgh, where he was convicted before the Lords of Justiciary 22d June 1717, of not praying for George I., in terms of the Act of Toleration, and discharged to preach or exercise any part of the ministerial functions for three years. He died there 7th July 1721, aged about 78. He marr., and had a daugh., Margaret.-[Presb., Ednam Sess., and Edin. Reg. (Bur.), Fountainhall’s Dec. ii., Rule's Sec. Vindication, MAS. 1697. JOHN SIMPSON, A.M., trans. from. Yetholm, called 19th May, and adm. 24th Nov.; died 2d March 1723, in his 56th year, and 29th min. Between him and Thomas Boston there existed a particular friendship. He was a serious, good man; "pathetic, zealous, and popular as a preacher, with substantial sermons, having a ready gift, concerned to gain souls, blessed with a great measure of his Master's countenance, and most acceptable to the people. A singular ease and sweetness of temper continued with him to the last." He marr. 10th June 1696 Anna Baxter, in the par. of Liberton, who died 30th Oct. 1712, aged 52, and had a son and daugh., Andrew and Jean.-[Presb., Sess., and Liberton Sess. 1725. JAMES CHRYSTIE, A.M., trans. from Simprim, pres. by John, Duke of Roxburgh, Sept. 1723, adm. (at Linton, on account of opposition, twice mobbing having taken place during the steps towards his settlement) 4th March 1725. His manse was destroyed by fire in Jan. 1727, and four volumes of the Synod Register were unfortunately consumed in the burning. He died 16th March 1739, in 52d age, and 22d min. He marr. 12th Nov. 1719 Sarah, daugh. of Mr Gilbert Laurie, min. of Hutton.-[Presb., and Hutton Sess. Reg., Acts of Ass. 1725, Tombst., Wodrow's Corresp.]

 

1740. ANDREW CHATTO; licen. by the Presb. 6th Sept. 1737, pres. by John, Duke of Roxburgh in Sept. 1739, and ord. 20tb March thereafter; died 20th June 1770, in his 55th year, and 31st min. He was an acute and sensible man. He married in 1747, and had Isabella, Christian, Agnes, who marr. John Rutherford, Esq. of Mossburnford, and another who marr. Mr Pringle.-[.Presb. 1771. WILLIAM SImpsoN, second son of Mr James S., min. of Wilton, licen. by the Presb. 3d Oct. 1769, pres. by John, Duke of Roxburgh, 11th July 1770, and ord. 18th April following; pres. to Edinburgh (Tolbooth Ch.) in July 1784, but it was withdrawn, and he was pres. and trans. to Edinburgh (Lady Yester's Ch.) 7th April 1785.-[Presb. 1786. JAMES RICHARDSON, trans. from Oxnam, pres. by John, Duke of Roxburgh in Aug. 1785, and adm. 6th July thereafter; died 8th Feb. 1807, in 76th age, and 45th min. He Marr. 26th Nov. 1764 Jean Kerr, who died in April 1823.-[Presb. Reg., Tombst., Sinclair's St. Acc. xvi., &c.]
