a German version of the New Testament. In theology he was a staunch Calvinist, while his command of Scripture, the fluency of his address, his illustration of truth, and the practical character of his textual applications, rendered his pulpit appearances particularly interesting. In Church polity he was long the acknowledged leader of the Presb., and while firmly adhering to his own views, was, especially in later years, on the best terms with his brethren who supported a different course. He marr. 13th Dec. 1810 a daugh. of Robert Nichol, Esq. of Edenbank, who was an amiable helpmate, by whom he had two daugh., Janet and Christian.-Publication Account of the Parish (New St. Acc. iii.), [Presb. MOREBATTLE or MEREBATTLE.

The church dedicated to St. Lawrence previous to the Reformation was a Prebend of Glasgow.

 

1582. ROBERT KER, removed from Mow. In 1585 he was one of those who refused to subscribe obedience to his Ordinary. He was also pres. to the Vicarage of Mow by James VI. 20th Feb. 1607, but demitted his charge 30th Nov. 1609.-[Booke of the Kirk, Reg. Assig. and Pres., Presb. 1610. THOMAS MOIR, pres. by Robert, Lord Roxburgh, in Nov. 1609, and adm. 15th Feb. following; pres. by James VI. (Mow being joined) 16th Dec. 1611; died after 4th June 1633. He marr. Isobel Ker, who survived him, and had a son, Mr William, of Ottirburne, who was served heir 29th Oct. 1639.-[Presb. Reg., Reg. Pres., Inq. Ret. Gen. 2457, Acts Parl. iii.]

 

1634. WILLIAM PENMAN, A.M., son of Mr William P., min. of Crichton, attained his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh 27th July 1622, licen. by the Presb. of Dalkeith 12th Aug. 1624, became chaplain to Lady Drummond, pres. by Robert, Earl of Roxburgh, in Nov. 1633, and adm. and inst. 7th Sept. thereafter; he gave xx li. towards building the Library of the Univ. of Glasgow 25th May 1636, was a member of the Gen. Assembly 1638, and of the Commissions 1646-1648, and died in Feb. 1668, aged about 66, in 34th min. He marr. Elizabeth, sister of Mrs Anna Abercrombie, servitrice to the Princess of Orange, she survived her husband and had a daugh. Elisabeth, spouse of Mr Robert Ramsay, min. of Salt-Preston, served heir to her father 9th Feb. 1697.-[Reg. Laur. Univ. Edin., and Old Dec., Presb., Dalkeith, Perth, rand Jedburgh Presb., Edin. 1668. WILLIAM GALBRAITH, A.M., trans. from Chirnside, pres. by William, Earl of Roxburgh, 1st Sept., coll. before 3d, and adm. and inst. 24th Nov.; trans. to Jedburgh before 20th Sept. 1682.-[Presb. Reg. Morrison's Dec. xviii.]

 

1683. ADAM PEACOCK, A.M., trans. from Ednam, coll. before 2d, and inst. 11th Jan.; deposed by the Commission of Assembly 1st Jan. 1695 for supine negligence, neglect of family worship, &c. Having opened a meeting-house in Stirling, he was interrupted in the act of preaching by Bailie John Allan and others in the end of Aug. 1703, and carried to prison for intruding upon their church, as they alleged, contrary to the Act 1695, not; having taken the oaths to Queen Anne, although he had taken them to William III., and was ready to take them anew.
