(Gartshore) declared he could not consent till he had a certificate from his former Ordinary, which was produced 30th Sept. 1688, " These are certifying all concerned that Mr George Houie, late min. at Mackerston, removed from the dioces of Glasgow free of any church censure, 17th Sept. 1688. 1689. WILLIAM CARMICHEL, A.M., formerly of Athelstaneford, received into the communion and ministry of the church by the Synod in 1692, demitted (being through age and infirmities incapable of performing the duties) 6th Sept. 1715, and died in 1718, in his 79th year.-[MS. 1715. SAMUEL BROWN, licen. by the Presb. of Jedburgh 25th Jan. 1710, became chaplain to the laird of Thirlstane, pres. by John, Duke of Roxburgh in Sept. and ord. 20th Dec. 1715; died between 3d Aug. and 7th Sept. 1725, in 10th min.-[.Presb. Reg.]

 

1726. WILLIAM WALKER, A.M., son of Mr Alexander W., min. of Kirkurd, was laureated at the Univ. of Edinburgh 9th April 1713, licen. by the Presb. of Peebles 31st Aug. 1720, pres. by John, Duke of Roxburgh in Feb. and ord. 20th July 1726; he was suspended by the Synod of Lothian and Tweeddale sine die 5th Nov. 1741; they impowered the Presb. of Peebles, 5th Nov. 1744, to take off the sentence if they saw cause. He died 1st Aug. 1759, aged about 66, in 34th min. Christian Fiddes, his widow, died 25th Jan. 1773.-[Edin. Grad., Presb., and Lothian Syn. Reg., &c.]

 

1760. THOMAS MACDOUGALL, LL.D., which degree had been conferred by the Univ. of St. Andrews 1st June 1758, licen. by the Scotch Presb. in London, and admitted as a preacher by the presb. 7th Nov. 1759, Pres. by the Commissioner for John, Duke of Roxburgh in Dec. following, and ord. 17th April 1760; died 20th June 1784, aged 52, in 25th min. He marr. 18th Jan. 1763, Anne Inglis, who died at Kelso 5th Jan. 1816, and had William, Catherine, and others.-[St. And. Univ. Cal., Presb. Reg., &c.]

 

1785. JAMES RICHARDSON, one of the masters in George Watson's Hospital, Edinburgh, licen. by the Presb. thereof 30th July 1755, ord. by the Presbyterian Class at Newcastle l0th Aug. 1756, as min. of the Wall-knoll-Meeting-house there, pres. by John, Duke of Roxburgh 6th Nov. 1784, and adm. 14th June following; died 15th May 1806, in 50th min. 1807. DAVID HOGARTH, licen. by the Presb. of Dunse 1st July 1806, pres. by Sir James Norcliff Innes 30th Aug., by Walter Ker, Esq. of Littledean, 7th, and by John Ballenden Ker, Esq., in Oct. following, and ord. 7th May thereafter; died 14th Aug. 1844, in 38th min. He was almost deprived of eye-sight for many years, and yet he possessed immense and varied information on almost every subject worthy of attention, and which in the shape of useful knowledge he brought to bear on all matters of practical importance. The grasp of his memory was of a marvellous order-so much so, that he could scarcely be laid to have forgotten any fact he had committed in the course of his life. Originally strong, its powers were quickened and increased by the helpless state to which he was reduced. Its three grand requisites-susceptibility, retentiveness, and readiness-were combined in him to a degree that could not well be surpassed. He was a superior scholar, and even in the two last years of his life was deeply and earnestly engaged in the study of the Greek Septuagint, and in
