LINTON  p. 461

 

Previous to the Reformation the church belonged to the Abbey of Kelso. The parish was supplied by THOMAS MOFFETT Reader at Nov. 1571, who continued in 1580. [Competing presentations having been issued by the Abbot and Convent of Kelso, and by the Queen, it was decided by the Commissaries in favour of Mark Kerr the presentee of the former, 4th Aug. 1567.-Connell on Tithes.]

 

1610. JOHN BALFOUR, A.M., trans. from Yetholm, (or perhaps holding both in conjunction) pres. by the Presb. jure devoluto 15th, and inst. 29th March, he was a member of the Assembly same year; demitted in April 1616.-[Presb. Reg., Booke of the Kirk.]

 

1619. ROBERT KER, adm. (at Peebles) in Sept.; he was accused in 1621 of marrying James, son of Archbishop Law, to Margaret Haitley, without proclamation; died between 16th March and 18th May 1658, in 39th min. He had two daugh., Margaret, who marc. John Ker, and Isobel.-[Presb., and Melrose Presb. Reg.]

 

1658. ROBERT BOYD, A.M., attained his degree at the Univ. of Glasgow in 1644, became chaplain to James, Earl of Home, called 25th July, and adm. 22d Sept. 1658; deprived by the Acts of Parliament 11th June, and of Privy Council 1st Oct. 1662.-[Mun. 1664. JOHN BROUNE, A.M., trans. from Tinwald, pres. by William, Earl of Lothian -, coll. before 30th Aug., and inst. 6th Sept.  trans. to Westerkirk in 1683.-[Presb. Reg..]

 

1683. JOHN WILKIE, pres. by the laird of Linton 10th July, ord. after 29th Aug., and inst. 19th Sept; deprived by the Privy Council 17th Sept. 1689, for not reading the Proclamation of the Estates, and not praying for their majesties William and Mary; as well as by Act of Parliament 25th April 1690.-[Presb. 1690. ROBERT BOYD, A.M., above mentioned, restored by the Act of Parliament 25th April; demitted, on account of his age, in April 1697, which was accepted 11th May following. He was " a very knowing man, and of great experience in matters of discipline."-[Reg. Gen. Ass. 1690, and Old Dec. i., Presb. Reg., Wodrow's Hist., &c.]

 

1698, WALTER DOUGLASS, brother to. the laird of Bonjedward, had lived most of his life in the par. of Jedburgh, licen. by the Presb. of Middlebie, called 20th July, and ord. 15th Sept.; died between 7th Nov. and 5th Dec. 1727, in 30th min.-Publication-Five Sermons preached before and after the celebration of the Lords Supper, Edin. 1721, 8vo.[Presb. 1728. GEORGE HALL, A.M., trans. from Abbotrule, pres. by Mr Murray of Chirrietrees in June, and adm. 24th Oct.; died 30th Nov. 1740, aged about 60, in 27th min. He marr. Emelia Duncan, who died at Edinburgh in 1768, and had two sons, Patrick and Gilbert, and a daugh. Jean, who marr. 1743. JAMES TURNBULL, licen. by the Presb. 7th Sept. 1742, pres. by John Pringle, Esq., of Haining, one of the Lords of Session, in April, and ord. 20th July 1743; died 13th Oct. 1780,
