The church was dedicated to St. Cuthbert, and previous to the Reformation belonged to the Abbey of Coldingham.

1585. DUNCAN WALKER, Reader at Borthwick from 1576 to 1580; in 1593 Bassendean, Nenthorn, and Gordon, were also in the charge, Makerston being excluded; pres. to the Vicarage of Nenthorn by James VI. before 24th May 1594; died previous to 17th May 1599.[Reg. 1599. THOMAS PORTEOUS, pres. to the Vicarage by James VI. before 30th March 1602; died before 17th May 1617.-[Reg. Assig., Sec. Sigill, and Pres., Presb., Haddingt., and Jedburgh Presb. Reg.]

 

1617. JOHN CLAPPERTON, A.M., son of Mr John C. min. of Lennal, was laureated at the Univ. of Edinburgh 22d July 1615, pres. by James VI. 17th May 1617. He was called before the court of High Commission in 1620, and permitted by John, Archbishop of St. Andrews to leave his Presb., and adhere to the next adjacent (Ersilton) 1st Aug. same year. In 1627 the parish contained six hundred and twenty catechisable persons, with a school very poorly provided, and the most part of the parents unable to pay school wages. Mr C. was deposed after 29th Sept. 1639, and previous to 2nd Sept. 1641, and died before 24th Aug. 1655. His Inventar and debts amounted to ixm jc liij li. He marr. 1639. JOHN SOMERVELL, A.M., son of James, second son of James, sixth Lord Somerville, had his degree from the Univ. of Edinburgh 25th July 1624, became schoolmaster of Morebattle, was licen. by the Presb. of Lanark before 27th Feb. 1627, ord. (at Kelso) 5th, and adm. 8th Oct. 1639; he was debarred by the wife of the preceding min. from entering the manse, 2nd June 1640, and was therefore non-resident. He joined the protesting party in 1651, was deposed by the Synod in Oct. 1660, and was still alive 20th Feb. 1666. He acquired lands in Teviotdale, and marr. Margaret Knox; who was allowed the vacant stipend 20th Nov. 1660, and had two sons,-James, who, while attending the Univ. of Edinburgh, was drowned bathing in the water of Leith, and Robert, who was living in good condition in 1679.-[Edin. 1661. ROBERT YOUNG, tutor to Alexander, Lord Coldingham, son of James Earl of Home, pres. by Charles II. 22nd Nov., and adm. before 18th Dec.; died April 1668, in 7th min.[Presb. Reg., Min.-book Reg. Priv. Seal v., Connell on Tithes iii.]

 

1669. ADAM PEACOCK, A.M., acquired his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh 18th July
