1633. ROBERT KNOX, A.M., eldest son of the preceding, bapt. 30th Dec. 1606, was laureated at the Univ. of Edinburgh 23rd July 1625; while living at Cranstoun was admitted to the Exercise at Dalkeith, 8th Dec. 1631; was pres. by Charles I. 24th June, and adm. by John, Bishop of Caithness, 30th July 1633. He preached before Parliament 8th Aug., and before his Majesty 12th Sept. 1641, was a member of the Assemblies 1643, 1644, 1646-1648, was long imprisoned in 1654 for naming the King in his prayers, and died at Edinburgh 15th May 1658, in his 52d year, and 25th min. To the accommodations occupied by his father as a manse he added two galleries, or to-falls, one to walk and study in, the other as a bed-chamber. He marr. 1st in March 1638, Margaret, sister of John Ker of Lochtour; 2dly, 15th June 1643, Elizabeth, second daugh. of Sir John Murray of Philiphaugh, who, in consideration of her husband's sufferings for his affection and loyalty to his Majesty, obtained an Act of Parliament 22d March 1661, conferring on her and her children the vacant stipend after his decease, which the whole heritors were content to pay. 1660. RICHARD WADDELL, A. M., trans. from Stenton, called in Feb., and adm. 14th May; he had the manse accommodation improved, and was trans. to Glasgow (Parsonage) in 1682.[Presb. Reg., Wodrow, and Haiq's Hist.]

 

1683. JAMES LORIMER, promoted from Regent Marischal College Aberdeen, coll. before 10th and inst. 17th April. Had D.D. from the Univ. of St Andrews 29th July, and was trans. to the Professorship of Divinity there before 5th Dec. 1686.-[Sess., and Presb. Reg., Act. Rect. Univ. St. And., Haig's Hist.]

 

1687. JAMES GRAY, A.M., formerly of Haddington 2d charge, adm. before 5th June; deprived by the Privy Council 3d Sept. 1689, for not reading the Proclamation of the Estates, and not praying for their majesties William and Mary, but praying for the late King James. As the manse was ruinous he boarded in the town. He is stated to have been “remarkable for his modesty, learning, veracity, and piety."-[Sess. Reg., Peterkin's Constitut. of the Church, MS. 1687. JOHN DICKSONE, A.M., formerly of Rutherglen, officiated in the meeting-house after the Toleration; restored to his former charge in 1690.-[,S. Presb. Eloq.]

 

1695. WILLIAM JACK, trans. from Bigggar, called in Nov. 1694, and adm. 24th Jan. after. A new manse and five vaults were assigned to him. He died in Sept. 1699.-[Presb. Reg. Haig's Hist., &c.]

 

1707. JAMES RAMSAY, A.M., trans. from Eyemouth, called 5th Sept. 1706, adm. 24th Sept. 1707. He was appointed one of the Deans of the Chapel-royal, but deprived in 1726 on the removal of John, Duke of Roxburgh from office; was elected Moderator of the Gen. Assemblies 11th May 1738, and 14th May 1741; and died FATHER of the Church 3d July 1749, aged about 81, in 57th min.
