1687. HENRY ARESKINE, A.M., one of the youngest of thirty-three children of Mr. Ralph E. of Shielfield, a descendant of the noble family of Mar, born in 1624, got his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh 15th April 1645, ord. at Cornhill in 1649, where his labours were eminently successful, till ejected by the Act of Uniformity, on Bartholomew day, 25th Aug. 1662_ The emoluments of his benefice having for some years been withheld, he went to London and petitioned his majesty, but was refused redress unless he would conform. Returning, lie took up his residence on tire paternal estate, exercising Iris ministry, as opportunity offered, till April 1682, when lie was seized by the Laird of Meldrum, and a party of military, while in the act of family worship, committed prisoner at Melrose, then at Jedburgh, and latterly at Edinburgh, where he underwent an examination before a committee of tire Privy Council, and was liberated only after a bond was given of vm merks that he would leave the kingdom within a fortnight. He lingered at different places in the border counties, and then fixed his abode at Monilaws, under shelter of Mr. Grey of Preston, not far from the scene of his former labours. He was again seized 2d July 1685 by the militia, and imprisoned at Wooler, and afterwards at Newcastle, but was released on the 22d of same month, on the passing of the Act of Indemnity, when he returned to his family at Monilaws. After liberty was granted to the Presbyterians, he received a unanimous call to the meeting-house at Newton, and was adm. in Sept. 1687, but the Revolution in 1689 changed the face of affairs, and he was trans. to Chirnside in 1690.-[Christian Mag. vii., Calamy's Continuation, ii., Wodrow's Hist., Presb. and Test. 1715. JOHN VETCH, licen. by the Presb. of Jedburgh 25th Jan. 1710, became assistant to Mr. William Vetch, min. of Dumfries, probably a relation, pres. by George Hume of Wedderburn 24th May, and by the Presb. jure devoluto, he having a majority both of heritors and parishioners, 7th Sept. 1714, ord. 14th April following; died in May 1722, in 8th min. He marr. in July 1717, Elizabeth Blair, who survived him.-[Presb., and Test. Reg. (Laud.), Mem. of W. Vetch]

 

1723. JAMES COLDEN, son of Mr. Alexander C., min. of Oxnam, licen. by the Presb. of Jedburgh 4th April 1722, pres. by Mr. Ninian Home of Wedderburn and Billie, 30th Oct. following, and ord. 10th Sept. thereafter; died 20th Sept. 1 7 54, in his 59th year, and 22d min. He marr. in Feb. 1724, Lilas, eldest daugh. of -Mr. George Byers, min. of St. Boswells; she died l0th Jan. 1768, and had a son Alexander, and others.-[Presb., and .Test. Reg. (Laud.), &c.]

 

1755. JOHN WAUGH nephew of Mr. Robert W., min. of Hutton, licen. by the Presb. of  Earlston 3d April 1739, ord. in 1 7 43 as min. of the Presbyterian congregation at Alnwick, pres. by Capt. George Johnston of Kimmerghame in Nov. 1754, and corroborated by Sir John Warrender of Lochend, Bart., and Col. James Johnston of Merston's Regt. in March following, adm. 16th May thereafter; died 26th June 1800, in 88th age, and 58th min. He marr., and had Robert, surgeon, 93d Foot, John, min. of Menmuir, and Isabella, who marr. Mr. George Cupples, min. of Swinton.-[Sinclair's St Acc. xvi., Presb. Reg., &c.]
