1805. JAMES BAIRD, trans. from Eccles, pres. by George III. in Jan., and adm. 18th April; died 11th Feb. 1814, in his 52d year, and 19th min. SIMPRIM. Previous to the Reformation the Church belonged to the Abbey of Kelso. The parish was supplied by THOMAS WATSON, reader, in 1576, and by JAMES SYMsouN, from 1578-1580, and was united to Swinton by the Lords Commissioners of Plantation 5th Aug., and suppressed 27th Sept. 1761.

1632. JOHN MAKMATH, A.M., was laureated at the Univ. of Edinburgh 24th July 1619, pres. by Charles I. 7th April; deposed 4th Sept. 1638, (which sentence was approved by the Assembly 11th Dec. following); for deserting his parish, declining the authority of the Presb., teaching all the Arminian doctrines, &c. Having been well affected to his Majesty's interests, and a great sufferer in his behalf, he had L.100 sterl. allowed out of the vacant stipends by Parliament 21st June 1661.-[Reg. Laur. Univ. 1641. ROBERT MELUILL, son of Sir James M., of Hallhill, became assistant to Mr Robert Colvill, min. of Culross, but refused to be adm. there without a free and lawful entry; adm. previous to 11th Oct., when he was pres. by Charles I. At the death of Mr Alexander Henderson in 1646, he was addebted to him ijc merks. In 1648 he escaped being struck by a soldier, for having, as he thought, said something against the Engagement.
