In 1679, when many Presbyterians were confined for not condemning the rising at Bothwell, or the murder of Archbishop Sharp, he reasoned with them, and got several of them liberated, on their signing a bond not to take up arms against his Majesty in future.-[Reg. 1668. PATRICK SUINTOUNE, A.M., trans. from Borgne, pres. by Charles II. 23d Feb., and coll. 14th March; continued 20th Oct. 1685, but the charge was vacant in 1689. He marr. Issobell Home, and had a son, Mr Patrick, and a daugh., Issobell-[Min.-Book Reg. Priv. Seal v., Reg. Collat., and Old Dee. iii., Tombst., Haddingt. Presb., Edin. (Bapt.), and Test. Reg. (Laud.), MS. Ace. of Min. 1689.]
1687. EDWARD JAMESON, A.M., above mentioned, returned and attended the first meeting of Presbyterian min., (after liberty had been granted), 6th July, he was found transportable at their meeting 16th Aug. after, and was restored by the Act of Parliament 25th April 1690. He demitted 12th Jan., and his demission was accepted 9th April 1691, (he having been previously admitted at Monimail).-[Lothian Syn. Reg.]

[MR CHARLES LITHGOW, who had forged testimonials of licence from the united Presb. of Kirkcaldy and Dunfermline, was called. When the discovery was made, and brought under the notice of the Gen. Assembly 31st Dec. 1695, they appointed him to be censured by the Presb. of Dunse, Chirnside, and Selkirk. This was done accordingly, from the several pulpits of these presbyteries, 12th Jan. 1696. 1696. JOHN LITHGOW, studied philosophy and divinity at the Univ. of Utrecht, and was licen. and ord. by the Scotch Presb. in London, called to this par. 2 6tb March, and adm. 20th April; died 9th April 1711.-[Presb., and Dunse Presb. Reg., Boston's Mem.] 1712. HENRY VEATCH, A.M., second son of William v., tenant in Redpath, took his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh 11th May 1704, licen. by the Presb. 20tb May 1712, called 31st following, pros. by the Presb. jure devoluto 4th Nov., and ord. 2d Dec. same year; died 25th Nov. 1753, in 70th age and 41st min. He marr., 1st, Frances, only surviving child of Sir John Swinton of that ilk, by his first marriage; 2dly, 29th June 1721, Martha, daugh. of John Gardner, merchant-burgess of Edinburgh, and had an only son, John, writer, Edinburgh.[Reg. 1754. GEORGE CUPPLES, son of Mr William C., min. of Kirkoswald, licen. by the Presb. of Dalkeith 1st Sept. 1752, pres. by George II. in April, and ord. 22d Aug.; died 14th Sept. 1798, in his 72d year and 45th min. A good story is told of him, worthy of a place in the Reminiscences of Dean Ramsay. A brother clergyman meeting him one day in Dunse, asked what had brought him that day into town. He replied, " I cam to tak aff a new coat." " I'se warran," rejoined his friend, " ye rather cam to tak it on." He marr. 26th June 1766 isabella, only daugh. of the Rev.
