He was promoted through the influence of John, Earl of Melfort, had his Conge d'elire 3d Dec. 1687, and patent 4th Feb. 1688, was consecrated (at Glasgow) soon after. He signed an address to James VII. (with other Bishops) 3d Nov. same year, followed his royal master to Ireland, where he was appointed Chancellor of Dublin, and went subsequently to France, residing at the court of St. Germain's, where he read the English Liturgy in his lodgings to such Protestants as attended him. About 1702 he went to Rome, and having abjured the Protestant Faith before Cardinal Sacripante, he received the tonsure from Clement XI., taking the additional name of Clement, and the four lesser orders from Cardinal Casoni. He had a pension from his Holiness, with the honorary title of Abbot, and died at Rome (having survived all the other deprived bishops of Scotland), in 1726, aged about 83.-[Wodrow's Hist., Brodie, and Fountainhall's Diaries, Keith's Catal., Collect. on Aberdeen and Banff', Scots Mag. lvii., Pratt's Buchan.]
