1612. WILLIAM COWPER, A.M., promoted from Perth 2d Charge. He had zealously opposed Episcopal innovation but changed his views after consulting Hall; one of the min. of Edinburgh. He was nominated by James VI. 31st July 1612, also to be Commendator of Glenluce, and of the Priory of Quhithorn same day, and was consec. (at Glasgow) 4th Oct. following; he was also constituted chaplain to his Majesty, and Dean of the Chapel Royal 2d June 1615, and was one of those appointed by his Majesty in 1616 to draw up a " Booke of Common Prayer." He took up his residence in the Canongate, Edinburgh, and statedly ofciated in the Abbey Church till Christmas 1618. He died 15th Feb. 1619, in 53d age, and 33d min., and was interred in the churchyard of Greyfriars, Edinburgh. He was an acceptable and eloquent preacher; and persons were found in his audience of the highest rank. He marr. 3d Feb. 1591 Elizabeth Duncansone; 2dly, Grissell Andersone, who survived him. He left three sons and several daugh., William (died 28th Feb. 1641), Andrew, John, and Lilias, a daugh. marr. John Crawfurd of Skeldoun, a second John M'Clellan of Borgue, father of Robert, first Lord Kirkcudbright, and another marr. Mr M'Culloch, of Myretolin.-Publications--Heaven Opened, 1611, 4to. 1619. ANDREW LAMB, trans. from BRECHIN, elected 10th April, and royal warrant issued for his translation 4th Aug.; he was a member of the Court of High Commission same year. He resided chiefly in Edinburgh, or Leith, became blind, and died in 1634, in 41st min. He left a. son James who was served heir 14th April 1635, and two daugh., one of whom marr.
