Mr John, to whom he resigned his benefice, Alexander, Lawrence, commendator of Glenluce, Mr George, Robert, slain in France, William, and Barbara, who marr. [JOHN GORDON, eldest son of Mr Alexander, above-mentioned, had the revenues of the Bishopric resigned in his favour, which was ratified by his Majesty 4th Jan. 1567, at which time he was in France, pursuing his studies. He is mentioned as Bishop of Galloway in 1583, but does not appear to have been consecrated, and demitted before 8th July 1586; became one of the gentlemen of the bedchamber to Charles IX., Henry III. and IV., was called to the ministry when fifty-eight years of age, and promoted to the Deanery of Salisbury, in 1603, was created D.D. at Oxford, " because he was to dispute before the long his kinsman," 13th Aug. 1605, and died 3d Sept. 1619, aged 75.- Publications- Assertionis pro vera vers; Ecclesioe nota Rupell. 1603, 8vo. [ ROGER GORDON, min. of Whithorn, had " letters to choose " issued in his favour 16th Jan. 1577, and a warrant to consecrate granted 17th Sept. 1578, but it does not appear to have taken place.-Reg. Pres.]
[GEORGE GORDON, a younger brother of the preceding, had a gift of the Bishoprick from his Majesty 8th July 1586, willing the Presb. or General kirk to inaugurate him in said Bisboprick, which does not appear to have been done, though he is termed Bishop 4th June 1588. 1610. GAVIN HAMILTON, A.M., promoted from Hamilton, appointed by James VI. 3d March 1605, and as Commendator of Whithorn 29th Sept. thereafter. He also got the abbacies of Dundrennan and Glenluce, and was nominated by the Assembly 1606, constant Moderator of the Presb. of Kirkcudbright, and they were charged by the Privy Council 17th Jan. thereafter to receive hirn as such, within twenty-four hours after notice under pain of rebellion. He was a member of the Assembly 1610, and consecrated (at London) 21st Oct. same year. He died in Feb. 1612, aged about 51, in great debt, although in possession of a bishoprick, two abbacies, and a priory. He seldom preached after his installation, and refused at the Synod preceding his death to accept a particular charge. The Inventar and debts amounted to xxijm ijc iij" xviij li. iij s. iiij d.
