1757. JOHN HUNTER, tutor in the family of William Maxwell of Ardwell, Esq., licen. by the Presb. 27th May 1752, pres. by George II. 27th Jan. 1756 (a dispute having arisen regarding the patronage, the Court of Session 9th Feb. 1757 decided that his Majesty should present twice and the laird of Garthland once), ord. 21st Sept. 1757; died 22d Feb. 1781, in 65th age and 24th min. He marr. 2dly, 23d March 1768 Margaret M'Harg, who died 22d Oct. 1786, and had a son, Samuel, an eminent merchant and newspaper proprietor in Glasgow, and a daugh. Mary, who marr. the Rev. 1782. HENRY BLAIN, A.M., had his degree from the Univ. of Edinburgh 24th April 1776, pres. by George III. 5th May 1781, and ord. 18th April thereafter; died 23d March 1817, in his 69th year and 35th min. He marr. 14th Feb. 1782 Helen M'Connell, who died 25th Aug. 1844, and had issue Henry, and others.-Publication-Account of the Parish (New St. Acc. ii.)- [Edin. Grad., Presb., and Syn. 1817. JAMES ANDERSON, a native of Balmaclellan, licen. by the Presb. of Wigton 26th Sept. 1809, pres. by Vans Hawthorn, Esq. of Garthland 23d May, and ord. 17th Sept. 1817. He got a new church built in 1827, and died 25th Aug. 1839, in 58th age and 22d min. He marr. 18th Aug. 1818 Margaret, eldest daugh. of - M'Ghie, Esq. of Castlehill, who died 12th April 1848, and had four sons and one daughter.-[Presb., and Syn. Reg., New St. Acc. iv., &c.]
CLASCHHANT. Previous to the Reformation the Church belonged to the Priory of Whithorn. The parish was supplied by JAMES LAW, reader, at Lammas 1571, and was united to Stonykirk about 1618.
1574. JOHN GIBSOUN, exhorter at Stannykirk in 1567; Stannykirk, Toscartoun, and Kirkmadin in the Rynnis were also in the charge in 1574, with jc xxiii li of stipend.-[Reg. Min., and Assig., Wodrow Miscell.]
1576. MICHAEL HAWTHORN, who had been in orders in the Popish Church, and held the vicarage of Borgue, entered Reader at Tosquartoun at Lammas, 1572; Toscartoun, Kirkmadin in Ryns, Leswalt, and Kirkcum, were all part of his charge in 1576; he continued in 1580, and removed to Killemorie or Kirkcolm.-[Reg. TOSKERTON. The Church was dedicated to St. Medan, and previous to the Reformation belonged to the Priory of Whithorn. The parish was supplied by MICHAEL HATHORNE, reader, from 1567; and united to Stonykirk before 20th June 1618.
1588. JOHN MOFFET, younger, reader at Kirkmabreck in 1585; Leswalt was also under his care in 1588; continued in 1589, and removed to Leswalt.-[Reg. Assig.] |
