up against him, on which he was deprived of his licence 5th Feb. 1766, for continuing after his dismissal. He was restored by the Synod in April 1769, pres. by George III. 20th March, and his ordination appointed for 27th Sept., but a quorum of ministers not being present, it was postponed, and he was ord. 4th Oct. 1770. He died 7th April 1791, in 21st min. HE, marr. 13th Sept. 1773 Isabella daugh. of Mr Butter, late Officer of Excise at Maybole; she gave a donation of X50 to the Ministers' Widows' Fund, and a similar sum to the Society for the Sons of the Clergy, and died 25th March 1829, having bequeathed X4500, and fifteen acres of land to build and endow a chapel and school in Glenapp, and also to endow a bursary to a student preparing for the ministry, those of the name of Butter and Campbell to be preferred.-[Presb., and Syn. 1800. SAMUEL KENNEDY, studied at the Univ. of Glasgow, licen. by the Presb. 7th Jan. 1795, pres. by Geo. III. 1st Feb., and ord. 14th May 1800; deposed 6th Oct. 1802 for fornication, which he confessed with great contrition.-[Presb., and Syn. Reg., &c.]

 

1803. PETER M`MASTER, licen. by the Presb. 5th Jan. 1803, pres. by Geo. III. 8th March, and ord. 12th May same year; trans. to Girvan 22d Feb. 1810.-[Presb., and Syn. Reg., &c.]

 

1811. WILLIAM M'KERGO, a native of the par., went to the Greenland fishing for several seasons as a surgeon, and was licen. by the Presb. 6th Feb. 1805. The presentation falling into the bands of the Presb. jure devoluto, he was petitioned for by the Earl of Stair, all the elders, and a very great number of heads of families, who had been acquainted with him from his infancy, and the Presb. (in a very full meeting of ten ministers and six elders) having the same good opinion, he was called 6th Dec. 1810, and ord. 4th April succeeding. In the Assembly 1826 he brought forward an overture relative to an Increase of the smaller Livings within the Church, and in that of 1828 another on the Proclamation of Banns in order to marriage. PORT-PATRICK, CHANGED FROM PORT-MONTGOMERY.

Disjoined from Inch and erected by Charles I. 10th May 1628. The church was built in 1629, on or near the site of Chapel-Patrick, obviously dedicated to St. Patrick, which served for “the black quarter of Inch."

 

1630. JAMES BLAIR, A.M., brother of Gavin B. of Braxfield, writer to the Signet, was laureated at the Univ. of Glasgow in 1626, on the Exercise there 19th April same year, adm. after 1st Sept. 1630. He had a letter from Charles I. to the Commissioners of Teinds, recommending an augmentation to his stipend 19th April 1634, he gave xl. merks towards building the Library in the College of Glasgow 12th April 1637, was a member of the Assembly in 1638, of the Commission of Assembly 1645, and continued 14th April 1652. Though not blamed for parsimony, he became very rich, and purchased a great part of the parish, which is
