JAMES TWEEDALE, son of Baillie John T. in Mid-Calder, and nephew of the former, licen. by the Presb. 24th March 1756, pros. by George II. 18th Nov. 1757, and ord. 10th Aug. following; died 6th May 1777, in his 44th year and 19th min. He marr. 26th Sept. 17 59, and loft issue.-Presb., and Syn. Reg., &c.]
1778. WILLIAM LEARMONT, a native of the par. of Loudoun, licen. by the Presb. of Irvine 30th April 1773, pres. by George III. 24th June 1777, and ord. 19th Feb. thereafter; he rot a new church built in 1814, and died 21st March 1822, in his 80th year and 45th min. He marr. 4th June 17 82 a daugh. of Mr Andrew Adair, min. of Whithorn. A daugh. Jane marr. NEW LUCE. Was disjoined from Glenluce, and erected in 1646; otherwise called the Moor-Kirk of Glenluce.
1647. JOHN CROOKS, A.M., was laureated at the Univ. of Glasgow in 1643, called before 6th Oct. 1646, and by the Presb. 10th Feb., and pres. by them and adm. 26th May 1647; continued 14th April 1652, and was trans. to Ballantrae about 1658.-[Mun. Univ. Glasg. iii., Presb. Reg.]
1660. ALEXANDER PEDEN, born at Auchencloigh, or in a cottage near Sorn Castle, (then in the par. of Mauchline), in or before 1626. He attended the fourth class, or the last of the philosophy in the Univ. of Glasgow in 1648, and was thon named Peathine. After this he was schoolmaster, precentor, and session-clerk at Torbolton, and perhaps subsequently at the newly erected par. of Fenwick. He was settled in 1660; deprived by the Acts of Parliament 11th June, and of Privy Council 1st Oct. 1662. He was accused before the Privy Council 24th Feb. 1663 of still continuing and "labouring to keep the hearts of the people from the present government in Church and State," and ordained to appear before them that day month, and was either then or soon after ejected. When he occupied his church for the last time, and took his farewell, he preached from Acts xx. 31, 32, continuing till night. In closing the pulpit door he knocked three times on it with his bible, saying-" I arrest thee in my Master's name, that none enter thee but such as come in by the door, as I have done." Be wandered about from place to place, and was accused by the Lord Advocate of keeping conventicles 25th Jan. 1666. He was indicted before the Justiciary 15th Aug. 1667, and decerned next day to be executed, but was pardoned 1st Oct. following. He went to Ireland, and returning was apprehended at Knockdow, par. of Ballantrae, in June 1673, for keeping a conventicle, and under suspicion of being at Pentland, sent to the Bass, by order of the Privy |
