KIRKMAIDEN p. 761

 

Edinburgh 29th July 1626, licen. by the Presb. of Dalkeith 27th Oct. 1631, adm. (colleague and fellow-helper) 10th July 1638; pres. by Robert Adair of Kinhilt 24th, and adm. 31st July 1639. Be was a member of the Assembly 1638, and of the Commissions of Assembly 1646, 1648. A petition was presented to the Presb. by the parishioners 10th July 1638, praying for a new church in a more centrical situation, to which they agreed, and petitioned the Privy Council to further and ratify the same. It was begun that year, and remitted by Parliament 1st Oct. 1639 to the Commissioners of Plantation. Being still unfinished, the Presb. 1st Dec. 1643 appointed Mr John Livingstone to preach at K., and in name of the Presb. exhort the parishioners to complete the building. Mr T. was appointed by the Presb. to attend the Earl of Cassillis's regiment 8th Jan. 1644; be was named by the Council of England in 1654 one of those for authorizing admissions to the ministry in Dumfries and Galloway, and died in April 1658, aged about 52, in 20th min. 1660. JAMES WILSON, A. M., born at Cartside, near Paisley, studied and had his degree from the Univ. of Glasgow in 1654, ord. in Sept. 1660; deprived by the Acts of Parliament 11th June, and of Privy Council 1st Oct. 1662.-[Sess. Reg., Mun. Univ. Glasg. iii., Wodrow's Hist., New St. Acc. iv.]

1665. JAMES M'GILL, a native of Teviotdale, inst. between 17th May and 31st Oct.; died in 1675, in l Oth min. He marr. in Jan. 1667 Elizabeth, daugh. of Patrick Inglis of Elvingston; she survived him, and had a son James, appointed to a bursary of Philosophy in the Univ. of Edinburgh 14th Aug. 1691.-[Sess., Syn., Test., Edin. 1677. DAVID CARSTAIRS, A.M., a native of Fife, studied at St. Salvator's College, and took his degree at the Univ. of St. Andrews 20th July 1664, passed trials before the Presb. of Forfar, and was recommended 6th April 1670 for licence, inst. in 1677; demitted before 24th Aug. 1681, and died in Edinburgh 11th Oct. 1692, aged about 49.-[Sec., and Edin. 1683. GEORGE YOUNG, A.M., trans. from Stranraer, pres. by Charles II. 24th Aug. 1681, and 7th April 1682; he is said to have been a scandalous drunkard and debauchee, to have been prevented from entering the pulpit, and ejected in 1689, by two of the Earl of Angus's or Cameronian company. 1689. JAMES WILSON, A.M., mentioned above, returned in 1689; and died 4th Dec. 1691, aged about 58, in 32d min.-[Sess., and Syn. Reg., Scot. Presb. Eloq., New St. Acc. iv., &c.]

 

1693. SAMUEL KELSO, min. of Whithorn, also took charge of this par. but removed to Donnoch-clonny, Co. Down, in 1695, not being settled here. Presb. Reg., New St. Acc. iv., &c.]

 

1697. ARCHIBALD MARBHELL, born in the par. of Falkirk, ord. 2d March; loosed by the Synod with a committee of the Commission of Assembly in July 1698. Tradition states he
