PRESBYTERY OF STRANRAER p. 760

1665. THOMAS IRELAND, trans. from Kirkmaiden, adm. between 17th May and 31st Oct. The escheit of his lyferent was gifted by his Majesty 7th Aug. 1666 to Mr Alexander Ireland, Dean of Dunkeld; continued 26th April 1671, and was trans. to Twynham probably about same year.-[Syn. 1689. JAMES BELL, A.M., above mentioned, returned before 29th Oct.; and was restored by the Act of Parliament 25th April 1690. He died 30th July 1698, aged 80, in 55th min. 1700. ARCHIBALD MARSHELL, formerly of Kirkmaiden; died 7th Sept. 17 43, in 47th min. Famous in the neighbourhood for having "laid the ghost of Galdenoch." His voice was so powerful, that " he could, on a calm day, be heard distinctly across Lochryan at the Cairn." He marr. 22d March 1702 Janet, daugh. of William Torbran, late Provost of Stranraer, and had a daugh. Margaret, who marr. Thomas Nesmith, writer there.-[Presb., Syn., and Stranraer Sess. 1745. JAMES M'CULLOCH, ord. min. of the Presbyterian congregation at Monyrea, Presb. of Bangor, Ireland, called to this par. 3d Sept. 1744, and adm. 20th Feb. following; pres. by James, Earl of Galloway 1st March 1745; he assumed the name of Tullus, and died 12th April 1794, in his 83d year and 52d min., esteemed as a cheerful companion and agreeable friend, while he was a pious and edifying preacher. 1795. WILLIAM ROSE, son of the Rev. John R., min. of Leswalt, licen. by the Presb. 4th April 1792, pres. by John, Earl of Galloway in Sept. 1794, and ord. 2d April thereafter; died 27th Feb. 1845, in 77th age and 50th min. He marr. 24th Sept. 1798 a daugh. of Mr John Crockat, min. of Parton.-[Presb., and Syn. Reg., &c.]

 

KIRKMAIDEN.

The church was dedicated to St Medan, and previous to the Reformation belonged to the Abbey of Saulseat. The parish was supplied by JOHN QUHEIT from 1574 to 1579, and THOMAS WRICHT in 1580.

 

1607. JOHN KALLENDER, trans. from Kirkmabreck; he gave iiij li towards building the Library in the Univ. of Glasgow about 1636, and died in July 1639, aged about 69, in 45th min.-[Reg.
