1822. JAMES FERGUSSON, A.M., son of the preceding born 3d Nov. 1800, licen. by the Presb. 6th Feb. 1822, pres. by George IV. 25th April, and ord. (assist. and suc.) 26th Sept. same year; died 1st Jan. 1862 in his 62d year and 40th min. He marr. Agnes T. SAULSEAT.

Previous to the Reformation the church belonged to the Abbey of Saulseat. The parish was supplied by JAMES THOMSONE, reader from 1567 to 1580. It has since been united to Inch.

 

1590. JOHN WATSONE, A.M., trans. from Kirkcolm, Inch being also under his care; continued in 1599, and removed to Inch.-[Reg. Assig.]

KIRKCOLM.

The church was dedicated to St Columba, and previous to the Reformation belonged to the Abbey of Sweetheart or Newabbey. The parish was supplied by ALEXANDER HUNTER from 1567 to 1580.

 

1565. MICHAEL HAWTHORNE, removed from Claschant; Claschant, Toscarton, Kirkmaiden, and Leswalt were also under his care in 1585. He died same year.-[Reg. Assig.]

 

1588. JOHN WATSONE, A.M., son of Peter W., min. of Dumfries, obtained his degree at the Univ. of St. Andrews in 1582. Claschant was also under his charge in 1588, he continued in 1589, and was trans. to Saulseat.-[Reg. Assig., and Deeds xxx]

 

1599. GEORGE KINCAID, A. M., trans. from Whithorn; Stanykirk being also in the charge, it remained so in 1601, he continued in 1608, when he was pres. to Mochrum and Loncaster united.-[Reg. Assig., and Pres.]

 

1620. JOHN PORTERFIELD, A.M., was laureated at the Univ. of Glasgow in 1602; he gave ii. dollars towards building the Library in the said Univ. about 1636, and died between 9th June and 16th Nov. 1642. His wife died 25th Nov. 1622, and a daugh., Elizabeth, marr. Hidon Agnew.-[Mun. Univ. Glasg. iii., Presb., and Test. Reg. (Glasg.), Commis. to Ass. 1638.]

 

1644. JAMES BELL, A.M., attained his degree at the Univ. of Glasgow in 1637, adm. min. or Chaplain to Colonel Campbell's regiment by the Syn. of Glasgow 20th Dec. 1643, pres. by Alexander, Earl of Galloway in Oct. 1643, and adm. 3d Jan. following. Not conforming to Episcopacy he was suspended by the Synod 24th Nov. 1663, yet continuing to discharge some parts of the ministry, the Presb. were ordained by the Synod 26th Oct. 1664 to cite him to demit his church at their next meeting, and in case of his not compeiring, or refusal, to pronounce sentence of deposition against him. He was indulged at Ardrossan by the Privy
