PRESBYTERY OF STRANRAER p. 758

 

1692. HUGH WILSON, above mentioned, min. at Castlereagh in Ireland, survived the storm of persecution, and returned in 1692, having been restored by the Act of Parliament 25th April 1690; he continued 15th April 1695.-[Wodrow's Anal, Reid's Ireland iii., Syn. Reg.]

 

1695. WILLIAM WILSONE, studied theology at the Univ. of Glasgow, ord. the 24th Sept. 1695; died between 6th March and 3d April 1725, in 33d min. He marr. the only child of John Cathcart of Genoch, who in 1698 conveyed the estate to her uncle Robert Cathcart of Knockdolian.-[Mun. Univ. Glasg. iii., Presb., and Syn. Reg., Paterson's Ayr i.]

 

1729. WILLIAM BIGGAR, min. of the Presbyterian congregation at Limerick, where he was imprisoned in 1698, merely for performing his ministerial duty. After being loosed from that charge, he was subjected to a similar detention for preaching in a private house at Drogheda 3d Oct. 1708. He was released after a confinement of six weeks on engaging not to preach any more in the town, and afterwards settled at Bangor, one of the best settlements in the north of Ireland, but a misunderstanding arising with his people, from his wishing an assistant, he left ; was called to this par. 3d March, and adm. 2d July 1729. He died between 29th March and 7th June 1738. " He was a, man of easy temper, with very considerable parts." -[Presb., and Syn. Reg., Wodrow's Anal., Reid's Ireland iii.]

 

1739. ROBERT FINDLAY, A.M., son of Mr Thomas F., min. of Prestonkirk, had his degree from the Univ. of Edinburgh l0th Dec. 1734, licen. by the Presb. of Dunbar 5th July 1738, called 3d April, and ord. 26th July 1739 ; had D.D. conferred by the Univ. of Edinburgh 7th Jan. 17 61. Having succeeded to a considerable fortune by the death of his brother David, he was obliged to engage in business at London, which prevented his doing the duty according to his wishes and engagements, he therefore gave in his demission with regret on the 3d, which was accepted 18th Nov. 1761. He purchased the estate of Drummore, in East Lothian, and died 30th March 1782, in 43d min. He marr. 15th Aug. 1763 Anne eldest daugh. of John Don, Esq.; she died 3d Feb. 1771, and had a son James, Esq. of Wallyford, and a daugh. who marr. David Anderson, Esq. of St. Germans.-[Edin. 1762. ANDREW Ross, trans. from Loudoun, pres. by George III. 17th Dec. 1761, and adm. 21st Oct. succeeding; he got a new church built in 1770, and in 1776 he applied to the Presb. to be relieved from his subscription to the Confession of Faith and Formula, but without success. He died 14th Dec. 1787, in 61st age and 35th min. He was proprietor of Balsarroch, and in all the relations of life his conduct was worthy and honourable. He marr. 1st, 21st July 1761, Elizabeth Corsane, who died 1st Feb. 1779, aged 35, and had three sons, General Andrew, George, merchant, London, and Sir John, of Culgruff, the intrepid Arctic navigator; 2dly, 7th Sept. 1784, Mary Kincaid, who survived him.-[Presb., and Syn. 1788. PETER FERGUSSON, licen. by the Presb. 27th April 1785, pres. by George III. 5th Jan., and ord. 18th Sept. 1788; died 11th May 1835, in his 80th year and 47th min. He marr. 19th Nov. 1798 Marion Murray, who died 26th Dec. 1847, and had Dr Thomas, St. John's, Antigua, James, who succeeded to the benefice, Robert, merchant, Glasgow, John, surgeon, Stranraer, and Elizabeth, who marr. the Rev.
