BALLANTRAE.

The church was removed and built here in 1604, the ancient name was KIRKCUDBRIGHT-INVERTIG. It was dedicated to St Cuthbert, which previous to the Reformation belonged to the Abbey of Crossraguell. The parish was supplied by JOHN CUTNNINGHAME, vicar, reader from April 1571 to 1574, ALEXANDER KENNEDY, reader from 1st May 1575 to 1585. The removal was ratified and the name of the parish changed by Act of Parliament 28th June 1617. It was disjoined from the Presb. of Ayr and annexed to that of Stranraer by the Gen. Assembly 24th Jan. 1699.

 

1608. JAMES HALL, A.M., was laureated at the Univ. of Edinburgh 28th May 1604, called in 1608, pres. to the Vicarage by James VI. in 1617; he gave xx merks towards building the library in the college of Glasgow about 1632, and died before 5th Feb. 1642, leaving a widow. -[Reg. 1642. ROBERT HAMILTON, son of Claud H. of Kennedie's Ernock, became min. at Killeleagh in Ireland. He proposed with others going to New England in 1636, but after almost reaching the coast of Newfoundland they were obliged to return by a severe storm, and landed at Carrickfergus; pres. by Charles I. 5th Feb. and adm. 2d Nov. 1642, coll. 12th April 1643, and inst. soon after. He had A.M. from the Univ. of Glasgow 9th May 1648. He continued 20th Nov. 1650, and probably went to another charge in Ireland. He was dead before March 1659. He marr. Margaret, daugh. of Hugh Montgomerie of Ballishary, afterwards Viscount Airds in Ireland; she died at Kilwinning March 165 9, " an old woman."-[Reg. Sec. 1658. JOHN CROOKS, A.M., trans. from New Luce; he died after 15th Feb. 1661, and his books, conform to catalogue, were estimat at iiic xxx li vj s viij d., insicht, &c., jc li, Frie geir, vc xlvi li j s x d. His widow, Margaret Simson, died at Edinburgh 8th Aug. 1667; they left issue.-[Test.(Glasg.), and Edin. Reg. (Bur.)]

 

1662. WILLIAM CALDWELL, A.M., son of a burgess of Glasgow, studied at the Univ. there, had his degree in 1647, and at the divinity class held a bursary on Mr Mich. Wilson's foundation, pres. by Charles II. 11th Sept. 1662, and 25th Feb. 1663; died in Sept. 16 7 2, in 10th min. The insicht, with certain books, was estimat at Ix li, Frie geir iiim viic xliii li ijs iiij d. He left two sons, John, and William, and two daugh. Anna, and Mary, who marr. 1673. GEORGE POLLOOK, A.M., son of a burgess of Glasgow, attained his degree at the Univ. there 5th July 1666, holding a bursary of divinity on Mr Mich. Wilson's foundation, passed
