He "departit this lif" in 1568, in 5th min. Having complained to the Assembly 29th Dec. 1563 that his wife, Anne Goodacker, had deserted him, and fled to York, in England, they ordained her to " compeir before the Superintendent of Lothian, and Sessioun of Edinburgh," sixty days after the citation. He had a son Gehut, and a daugh. Susanna.-Publication A Translation from the French of Beza's Answer to an Oration, and certain Articles of the Cardinal of Lorraine, 1562. He was also connected with Knox's Treatise on Predestination, 1560, sm. 8vo.-[Reg. Min., Booke of the Kirk, Knox's Works, v., vi., Abp. Parker's Correspondence.]

 

1572. ROGER GORDON, entered at Beltan, with jc xxxiii li vi s. viii d. of stipend. In 1574 he had also charge of Crugiltoun, Glassartoun, and Kirkmaiden in Fairnys, with the kirklands in addition to the former stipend. He was elected Bishop of the Diocese, and a warrant passed 17th Sept. 1578 for his consecration, but it does not seem to have taken place. 1582. JAMES ADAMSONE, master of the grammar school of Wigton, pres. to the Vicarage pensionary by James VI. 6th March; he continued in 1589, and was trans. to Penningham in that or following year.-[Reg. Pres., and Assig., Calderwood's Hist., Booke of the Kirk.]

 

1590. ROGER GORDON, above mentioned, trans. from Kirkmaiden in Fairness, returned in 1590, having Glasserton also in charge; he continued in 1593. Janet Stewart, his widow, died in the par. of Kirkinner 8th July 1598, and had a son Alexander G., of Kirkland of Kirkinner. (A Mr Roger Gordoun, Dean of Dunblane, died before 5th June 1592.-[Reg. 1594. GEORGE KINCAID, A.M., was laureated at the Univ. of Glasgow in 1590; continued in 1597, and was trans. to Kirkcolm about 1599-[Mun. Univ. Glasg. iii., Reg. Assig.]

 

1599. JAMES DAVIDSONE, A.M., trans. from Wigton; continued in 1606, and adhered with forty-one others to the Protestation 1st July against the introduction of Episcopacy. He died before 7th April 1617.-[Reg. Assig., and Pres., Row, Calderwood, and Stevenson's Hist.]

 

1614. ABRAHAM HENRYSONE, A.M., trans. from Borgue; he continued 21st Oct. 1634, and was a member of the Commission for maintenance of Church Discipline. His son William was served heir 2d Jan. 1644.-[Reg. Assig., Maitland Miscell. ii., Inq. Ret. Wigton 114, &c.]

 

1638. ANDREW LXUDER, A.M., had his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh 22d June 1633. He was a member of the Assembly 1638, and of those from 1645 to 1648, and was called in the latter year to Ayr, but refused to go. He was appointed by the Council of England 8th Aug. 1654 one of those for authorising admissions to the ministry in Dumfries and Galloway.-[Reg. Laur. Univ. 16-. WILLIAM MAITLAND, A.M., attained his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh 23d May 1655. He was deprived by the Acts of Parliament 11th June, and of Privy Council 1st Oct. 1662, and was accused before the Privy Council 23d Feb. thereafter of "still labouring to keep the hearts of the people from the present government in Church and State ;" in compliance
