PRESBYTERY OF WIGTON p. 744
1747. PATRICK ANDERSON, licen. by the Presb. 29th Feb. 1744, pres. by Alexander, Earl of Galloway 24th Dec. 1746, and ord. 27th Aug. thereafter; died 30th June 1759, in 12th min. He marr. in 1747 Barbara Mackie, who died 4th April 1771.-[Presb., and Syn. Reg.]
1760. WILLIAM BOYD, A.M., son of Mr Andrew B. min. of Twynham, got his degree from the Univ. of Edinburgh 14th April 1743, and had a bursary of divinity from the Exchequer 7th July 1750, ord. 28th March 1760; got a. new church built in 1777, had D.D. from the Univ. of Edinburgh 22d Aug. 1785, and died 18th June 1794, in 67-th age and 35th min. He discharged with fidelity and diligence the duties of the ministry, was zealous for the progress of the gospel, and endeavoured to walk according to its precepts. He marr. 16th Aug. 1762 Joanna daugh. of Mr James Maitland, min. of Sorbie; she died 31st July 1802, and had four sons, Edward a merchant, James, Benjamin, and Mark, both stockbrokers, London.-Publication-Account of the Parish (Sinclair's St. Acc. iii.)-[Presb., and Syn. 1795. JAMES BLACK, licen. by the Presb. 27th July 1784, pres. by John, Earl of Galloway in Oct. 1794, and ord. 23d April following; died 16th May 1826, in his 72d year, and 32d min. His wife died 17th July 1814, by whom he had the Rev. Edward, min. at Montreal, William, physician, Bolton, Samuel, banker, Glasgow, John, James, banker, Wigton, Elizabeth marr. Mr William Dill, writer, Newton-Stewart, and Jessie marr. the succeeding incumbent. -[Presb., and Syn. Reg., &c.]
1825. SAMUEL RICHARDSON, A.M., a native of Dryfesdale, obtained his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh 24th Feb. 1814, licen,. by the Presb. of Lochmaben same year, became schoolmaster of Maybole in 1821, pres. by George, Earl of Galloway in Nov. 1824, and ord. (assist. and suc.) 10th June thereafter. He got a new church erected in 1839, had D.D. from the Univ, of Edinburgh in 1860, and died 12th July 1863, in his 80th year, and 39th min. He marr. Jessie daugh. of the former min., and had an only son James Black.-Publication-Account of the Parish (New St. Acc. iv.)- [Presb., and Syn. Reg., Edin. Grad., &c.] SORBIE. The church was dedicated to St. Fillan, and previous to the Reformation belonged to the Abbey of Dryburgh. The parish was supplied by JOHN MAKCAILL, reader from 1567 to 1578, PETER GOWAN, or MAKGOWNE, in 1579, 1580.
1590. ARCHIBALD NORVELL, pres. to the Vicarage by James VI. 15th Jan. 1583, and Reader from 1585 to 1589; he continued in 1591.-[Reg. Pres., and Assig.]
1633. ALEXANDER RYNE, or RYND, had his degree at the Univ. of St. Andrews in 1614, He was pres. to the Vicarage of Kirkmadyrne (which " is unit, and annexit to Sorbie to remain in all tyme coming,") by James VI. 16th July 1633.
