PENNINGHAM. The church was dedicated to St. Ninian, and belonged to the Archdeacon of Galloway. The parish was supplied by Mr MARTINE GIB, reader from 1567 to 1574.
1576. LYON BROWN, Exhorter at Durrisdeer in 1567, pres. to the Vicarage there by James VI. 25th Jan. 1574 (which does not seem to have taken effect), and to the personage and vicarage here 24th May 1576, at which time Sorbie formed part of his charge. 1590. JAMES ADAMSONE, trans. from Whithorn. He was a member of the Assemblies 1590 and 1610, and was appointed constant Moderator of Presb. by the Assembly 1606, and they were charged by the Privy Council 17th Jan. following to receive him as such within twenty hours after notice, under pain of rebellion. He gave x merks towards building the library in the Univ. of Glasgow in 1636, and continued 2d Oct. 1638.-[Reg. Assig., Booke of the Kirk, Priv. Counc. Reg., Commiss. to Ass. 1638, Mun. Univ. 1661. JAMES GARTSHORE, A.M., was laureated at the Univ. of Glasgow in 1654; continued 1st Nov. 1665, and was trans. to Kilsyth in 1666.-[Mun. Univ. Glasg. iii., Syn., and Sess. Reg.]
1666. JAMES COLQUHOUN, A.M., trans. from Whithorn, adm. before 30th Oct.; having had no small share in the persecution of several of his parishioners, he was outed by them in 1689, when be went to Ireland, got a. benefice there, and died before 30th July 1731. He mare. and had James, of Langloan and Drumpeller, ropemaker, Glasgow, Agnes spouse of William Cullen, shoemaker, Whithorn, Sarah spouse of Robert Love, in par. of Belleston, Co. 1690. THOMAS COBHAME, min. of the Presbyterian congregation at Kirkdonald in Ireland. He was a member of the Assembly 1692, and continued 18th April 1693, but returned to his former charge.-[Reid's Ireland ii., Syn., and Sess. Reg., Reg. Gen. Ass. 1692, &c.]
1696. ROBERT ROWAN, studied theology at the Univ. of Glasgow, and was licen. by the Presb. there 24th July 1695, called , and ord. (by a Committee of Synod) 4th Nov. 1696; died 9th Aug. 1714, in 55th age and 18th min., having been eminent for piety and diligence, and leaving issue.-[Mun. Univ. 1716. JOHN MILLER, called 11th Sept. 1715, and ord. 8th Feb. succeeding; died 30th July 1746, in 31st min. He marr. Anne Hill, who died at London 30th Dec. 1777, and had a son and two daugh., George, planter, Virginia, latterly Consul for the United States at London, Ann who marr.
