1748. ROBERT WALKER, studied at the Univ. of Edinburgh, licen. by the Presb. of Stranraer 18th May 1743, called 29th Dec. 1747, and ord. 1st April succeeding; died 12th Nov. 1785, in 38th min. He marr. in 1748 Elizabeth Macnaught, who died 23d April 1803.[Presb., and Syn. Reg., &c.]

 

1787. JOHN STEVEN, licen. by the Presb. of Stranraer 5th March 1783, pres. by George III. in July 1786, ord. 5th July 1787; died 17th Aug. 1828, in his 77th year and 42d min. 1822. ALEXANDER YOUNG, A.M., licen. by the Presb. of Stranraer 16th July 1817, pres. by George IV. in Nov. 1821, and ord. (assist. and suc.) 14th March thereafter; he was elected min. of Newington Chapel of Ease in 1826, but declined to accept it, and died 1st April 1863, in his 68th year and 42d min. He marr. 14th Dec. 1852 Mary Gavin Ritchie.-[Presb., and Syn. Reg., &c.]

 

MONIGAFF.

Previous to the Reformation the church belonged to the Abbey of Tongland, or rather to the Bishop of Galloway. The parish was supplied by JOBN STEWART, exhorter in 1567.

 

1574. JOHN WALCAR, Kirkmabreck and Kirkdale being also under his care, with lxxx li of stipend. He was accused in the Assembly 1575 of not awaiting on his cure.-[Reg. Assig., Wodrow Miscell., Booke of the Kirk.]

 

1578. JOHN MOFFET, Exhorter at Kirkmabreck in 1567, and Reader there from 1574; continued in 1580, and removed to Kirkmabreck.-[Reg. Min., and Assig., Wodrow Miscell.]

 

1590. ANDREW MENZIES, continued in 1614.-[Reg. Assig.]

 

1628. ALEXANDER HAMILTON, A.M., was laureated at the Univ. of Edinburgh 30th July 1614; he was a member of the Commission for the maintenance of Church Discipline 21st Oct. 1634. In 1636 he contributed xx 1-ii towards building the library of the college, Glasgow, but was dead before 22d July 1643, when his son William was served heir-[Reg. Laur. Univ. Edin., Inq. Rect. Gen. 2884, Mun. Univ. Glasg. iii., Maitland Miscell. ii., &c.]

 

1638. WILLIAM MAXWELL, A.M., had his degree at the Univ. of Glasgow in 1631; he was a member of the Commission of Assembly 1649; deprived on the establishing of Episcopacy in 1662. His son Colonel William (founder of the family of Cardoness) was a brave officer, and the last survivor of those who came over from Holland with King William in 1688; he died 16th June 1752, aged 95.-[Mun. 1664. ROBERT FLEMING,A.M., attained his degree at the Univ. of Glasgow in 1656; adm. before 25th Oct. 1664; trans. to Mearns in 1669.-1Mun. Univ. Glasg. iii, Syn. Reg.]

 

1669. JOHN ARBUCKLE, A.M. trans. from Stranraer; adm. between 29th April and 5th Oct.; he continued 27th April 1671, and was trans. to Craigie about 1681.-[Syn. Reg.]
