PRESBYTERY OF WIGTON p. 740

 

MOCHRUM.

Previous to the Reformation the church belonged to the Priory of Whithorn. The parish was served by LEWIS FRASER, exhorter from 1567, reader to 1586.

 

1590. JOHN YOUNG, trans. from Longcastle; died before 2d Aug. 1608.-[Reg. Assig., and Pres.]

 

1608. GEORGE KINCAID, A.M., trans. from Kirkcolm, pres. to the Vicarage of M., and parsonage and vicarage of Longeaster united, by James VI. 2d Aug. He probably continued in 1610, when he was a member of Assembly, and was trans. to Kirkmaiden in Fairness before 1614, but returned previous to 1636, when he contributed ii dollars towards building the library of the Univ. of Glasgow. He had been deposed by the Synod for “insufficiencie," when nearly eighty years of axe-a sentence which the Gen. Assembly considered unjust 3d Aug. 1642.[Reg. 1646. JOHN PARR, A.M., was laureated at the Univ. of Glasgow in 1639; trans. to Stranraer in Oct. 1649.-[Mun. Univ. Glasg. iii., Stranraer Presb. Reg., Livingston's Life, &c.]

 

1651. ROBERT RICHARDSONE, A.M., took his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh 15th April 1645, adm. before 17th March 1651; deprived by the Acts of Parliament 11th June and of Privy Council 1st Oct. 1662. He was accused at the Privy Council 24th Feb. following, of "still labouring to keep the hearts of the people from the present government in Church and State." He had sasine of the burgh-land of Dalskairth and pertinents in Nov. 1667, and died in England before 1670. His librarie was estimat at jc xx li, and the insicht, &c., at xlviii i-i.-[Reg. Laur. 1664. JAMES BARRIE, A.M., had his degree from the Univ. of Glasgow in 1639. He had L.100 sterling allowed by Parliament from vacant stipends 12th July 1661, adm. before 25th Oct. 1664; trans. to Blantyre in 1666.-[Mun. Univ. Glasg. iii., Acts Part. vii., Syn. Reg.]

 

1667. JAMES COOPER, trans. from Wigton, adm. before 22d May; trans. to Humbie in 1681.-[Syn., and Haddington Presb. Reg.]

 

168-. HENRY WALKER, A.M., trans. from Whithorn; he deserted his charge in 1689, went to Blackfriars Wynd, Edinburgh, where he was accused of marrying persons irregularly, had a pension of L.29 from her Majesty's Exchequer out of the rents of the Bishopric of Ross 21st Oct. 1712, and died 13th Nov. 1730, aged 83.-Publication-A Sermon upon the Nativity of our Lord Jesus Christ, Edin. 12mo.-[MS. 1693. JAMES STEWART, adm. in 1693; demitted 14th July 1697, which was accepted by the Synod and a Committee of Assembly 8th July 1698.-[Presb., and Syn. Reg.]

 

1701. WILLIAM COOPER, governor to Alex., Lord Garliss, called 15th June, and ord. 11th Sept.; died 1st June 1747, in 46th min. He marr. 6th April 1703 Margaret Caldwall, in the par. of Glasserton.--[Presb., Syn., and Glasserton Sess. Reg.]
