PREBBYTERY OF WIGTON p. 736

 

Peter, and Lexicon Anglo-Graeco Latinum, born about 1639, he was the fellow-student of Alex., Earl of Galloway at the Univ. of Edinburgh, and took his degree 19th July 1661, licen. by George, Bishop of Edinburgh 23d Jan. 1663; was adm. same year, and elected Synod-Clerk 25th Oct. 1664, continued 15th Oct. 1684, when he gave in the list of disorderly in the parish including one of the Wigton Martyrs. 168-. JAMES CHRYSTIE, A.M., trans. from Kirkcowan; discharged by the rabble in 1689. He went to Ireland, was adm. to Bandony, in the diocese of Derry, and died 13th May 1718, aged about 76. He marr. in 1696 Margaret Kincaid, who survived him.-[MS. Acc. of Min. 1689, Test. Reg.]

 

1689. GEORGE WAUGHE, A.M., above mentioned, returned before 16th July 1689, was restored by the Act of Parliament 24th April 1690, and died in Dec. 1691, aged about 72, in 45th min. He marr. 10th May 1649 Janet Thomsone.-[Syn., Presb., and Edin. Reg. (Marr.), Reid’s Ireland, ii.]

 

1694. HUGH COWAN, adm. before 20th March; demitted l4th July 1697, which was accepted 7th July 1698.-[Syn., and Presb. Reg., &c.]

 

1702. WILLIAM CAMPBELL, licen. by the Presb. 24th Feb. 1702, called , and ord. 22d Sept. same year; died in Sept. 1742, in 40th min. He marr. 7th Aug. 1721 Margaret, second daugh. of Mr William Reid, min. of Dunning, she died 28th Jan. 1778.-[Presb., Syn., and Auchtermuchty Sess. Reg., &c.]

 

1744. ANDREW REID, licen. by the Presb. 23d Feb. 1743, called 8th Sept. following, ord. 22d March 1744; died 1st May thereafter, in 1st min.-[Presb. Reg., &c.]

 

1745. JOHN HART, governor to the laird of French's son, licen. by the Presb. of Stranraer 7th April 1742, Ares. by John Vans of Barnbarroch, Esq., with consent of his curators, in Oct. 1744, and ord. 11th April succeeding; died 1st Jan. 1767, in 51st age, and 22d min. He marr. in 1749 Elizabeth Smith, who survived him, and had two daugh., Christian, marr. to James Jollie, Esq., writer to the signet, and Mary to Capt. William Sheriff of the Madras Cavalry in H.E.I.C.S-[Presb., and Syn. Reg., Tombst., &c.]

 

1769. ROBERT HENDESON, ord. 27th June; died 16th April 1778, in 9th min. He marr. 6th Jan. 1772 Helen Maitland, who died 13th Oct. 1787.-[Syn. Reg., &c.]

 

1779. JOHN GRAHAM trans. from Dunlop, adm. 30th June; died 18th June 1815, in his 83d year and 53d min. He was an able and learned divine; serious, fervent, and impressive in his instructions, a bold reprover of vice, and a persuasive teacher of virtue. Unaffected piety, simplicity of manners, and warm benevolence drew to him the affection and esteem of' his acquaintance. He was well versed in church law, and was the early and steady friend of the Rev. Dr M'Gill of Ayr. He marr. 161h July 1764, Christian Hawthorn, who predeceased him, without issue.-Publications-Account of the Parish (Sinclair's St. Acc. iv., xxi.).
