KIRKMAIDEN in FAIRNESS.

The church was dedicated to St. Medan, and previous to the Reformation belonged to the Priory of 1Vhithorn. The parish was supplied by RODOLPH PEIRSOUN, reader and vicar in 1567, who died in 1569; GEORGE STEVINSOUN reader from 1569 to 1576; and GEORGE MURE in 1590, and 1591; and was united to Glasserton by the Commissioners of Parliament or Teinds 20th June 1618.

 

1585. ROGER GORDON, removed from Whithorn; he continued in 1589, but removed again to Whithorn about 1599.-[Reg. Assig., Clanahan's Discourses.]

 

1614. GEORGE KINCAID, A.M., removed from Mochrum; Mochrum and Longcaster being also under his care; lie continued in 1615, and returned to Mochrum.-[Reg. Assig.]

 

KIRKCOWAN OR KIRKCUAN.

The Church was dedicated to St. Kenin, and previous to the Reformation belonged to the Chapel Royal of Stirling. The parish was supplied by JOHN FLRMING, Reader, from 1567 to 1580.

1637. JOSEPH CLELLAND, A.M., had his degree from the Univ. of Glasgow in 1613, was on the Exercise at Linlithgow I7th Aug. 1614, and removed to that of Wigton 29th May 1616. In 1627 the number of communicants were “twa hundretlie," and the stipend v° merks, but no schools. Mr C. contributed ii dollars in 1636 for the building and library in the Univ. of Glasgow; he continued 17th Nov. 1641.-[Mun. Univ. Glasg. iii., Linlithy., and Stranraer Presb. Reg., Stat. 1662. ALEXANDER ROSS A.M., graduated at the Univ. of Edinburgh 28th July 1648, deprived by the Acts of Parliament 11th June, and of Privy Council 1st Oct. 1662. He was complained against to the Privy Council 24th Feb. following as "still labouring to keep the hearts of the people from the present government in Church and State," and being an heritor in the par. of Colmonell, was again accused before them of keeping " constantly conventicles in his house of Dalrioch, and baptizing children."-[Edin. Grad., Wodrow's Hist., &c.]

 

1666. JOHN SOMERVELL, A.M., trans. from Lessudden, adm. between 26th April and 30th Oct.; trans. to Glasserton before 22d May 1667.-[Syn. Reg.]

 

1667. JAMES LEIPER, A.M., was laureated at the Univ. of Glasgow in 1664, adm. between 23d May and 29th Oct. 1667. He had sasine of an annual rent of iixx iiij li out of the xx li land of the barony of Wistoun 14th Nov. 1671, and was trans. to Roberton in 1682.-[Mun. Univ. 1682. JAMES CHRYSTIE, A.M., a native of Moray, attained his degree at the Univ. and King's College, Aberdeen 17th July 1662, pres. by Mr John Hamilton, sub-dean of the Chapel Royal, 12th Oct. 1682; trans. to Kirkinner about 1686.--[Fasti Aberd., Presb. Reg.]
