PRESBYTERY OF WIGTON p. 729

 

Proposed to be erected at Quhitterne by the General Assembly April 1581, and existed in 1593. The Register begins 22d Oct. 1696, and is contained in six volumes. There is a chasm from 11th Oct. 1758 to 22d June 1784. A previous volume began 13th Nov. 1663, but is not known to be now in existence.

 

WIGTON.

The church was dedicated to St Machute, and previous to the Reformation belonged to the Priory of Whithorn.

 

1567. ROBERT BLINDSCHEILL, with a stipend of iiijxx li, he ministering the sacraments at Penynghame, Kirkennar, and Longcaster. In 1574 Penynghame and Sorby only were in charge with the parish, and a stipend of  jc li. He also held the vicarage of Sorbie, and died in July 1576.-[Reg. Min., and Assig., Wodrow Miscell., Test. 1576. JOHN ZOUNG, Monygoff, Kirkmabreck, and Kirkdale were also in charge with the parish; trans. to Longcastle, he was pres. to the vicarage of Mochrum by James VI. (and is there called min. of Wigton) 29th Sept. 1586.-[Reg. Assig., and Pres.]

 

1590. JAMES DAVIDSOUN, A.M., took his degree at the Univ. of St Andrews 21st March 1580, pres. to the vicarage of Kirkmadryne by James VI. 10th Feb. 1596; continued in 1597, and was trans. to Whithorn about 1599.-[Act. Rect. Univ. St. And., Reg. Assig., and Pres., Melville's Autob.]

 

1601. JAMES BRYSSOUN, trans. from Durrisdeer ; continued in 1608.-[Reg. Assig.]

 

1614. GEORGE M'KIESOUN, trans. from Nairn; continued in 1615.-[Reg. Assig.]

 

1618. JAMES BRYSSOUN, above mentioned, returned before 19th June; died, while "induellar in Air," after 25th March 1623. The insicht of the house, &c., were estimat to xx li, Frie geir, d.d., ijm vc xlij li. He marr. Margaret Cunynghame, who survived him, and had a son, Mr James, who was served heir 11th Aug. 1624.-[Reg. Old Dec. iii., Test. Reg. (Glasg.), Inq. Ret. Gen. 1155.]

 

1623. JAMES MUIRHEAD, A.M., graduated at the Univ. of Edinburgh 24th July 1619; adm. prior to Feb. 1623, continued, but was sick, 13th Feb. 1627.-[Edin. Grad., Test. (Glasg.), and Stranraer Presb. Reg.]

 

16-. JOHN ROBERTSON, A.M., was laureated at the Univ. of Glasgow in 1622; trans. to 1633.-[Reg. Sec. Sigill., and Pres.]

 

1634. JAMES HAMILTON, A.M., had his degree at the Univ. of Glasgow in 1624, pres. by Charles I. jure devoluto 7th April 1634, was a member of the commission for the maintenance of Church Discipline 21st Oct. same year ; he gave x merks towards the building and
