1807. THOMAS BROWN, born in the par. of Closeburn 9th Aug. 1776, educated at WallaceHall, became tutor in family of Major Hoggan of Waterside, studied at the Univ. of Glasgow (where he obtained a prize 1st May 1788 for the best specimens of Translation from Latin into English), and also at Edinburgh. During the latter part of his course he was usher in an academy at Inveresk, and afterwards tutor in the family of the Rev. Dr. Hunter, Professor of Divinity, Edinburgh; licen. by that Presb. 29th Aug. 1804, pres. by Geo. III. in Sept. 1806, and ord. 26th March thereafter; trans. to Glasgow (St. John's Ch.) 20th April 1826.[M'Farlan's Mem., Steven's High School Edin., Presb., and Syn. Reg., Smith's Scott. 1826. WILLIAM DOW, youngest son of the Rev. Dr D., Irongray, studied at the Univ. of Edinburgh, licen. by the Presb. of Dumfries 6th Nov. 1821, pres. by George IV. 13th June, and ord. 21st September 1826. Having withdrawn his signature and adherence to the Confession of Faith, he was deposed by the Gen. Assembly 23d May 1832. He had A.M. from the Univ. of Edinburgh 17th April 1839, made a tour over a portion of the Continent, returned, and died at Albury, Surrey, 3d Nov. 1855, in 56th age. He marr. 25th Oct. 1836 Stuart daugh. of Adam Maitland, Esq. of Dundrennan and Compston. 1832. DUGALD STEWART WILLIAMSON, son of the Rev. John W., Twynholm, licen. by the Presb. 26th June 1826, pres. by William IV. in June, and ord. 20th Sept. 1832; died 8th March 1859, in 56th age and 27th min. He marr. 24th May 1837 Julia Curwen daugh. of Captain Stanley, R.N., and had two sons and four daughters. Publications-Five single Sermons, Edin., 1837-1847, 8vo.; Metrical Paraphrase of the Book of Revelation, Kirkcudbright, 1838, 8vo.; The Rivers of Galloway: a Poem, Parts I., II., Dumfries, 1840-1841, 8vo.; Thoughts on present scarcity of Salmon, Stranraer, 1852, 8vo. ; Account of the Parish (New St. Acc. iv.)- [Presb., and Syn. TWYNHOLM, or TWYNHAM.

Previous to the Reformation the church belonged to the Abbey of Holyrood. The parish was supplied by JAMES MUIR, reader, from 1567 till he died at Beltyn in 1572; ALEXANDER ZOUNG, from Beltyn, 1572 to 1576; JOHN MEKLE, 1578-1579; and ALEXANDER COLE, from 18th Oct. 1580.

 

1582. JOHN AIKMAN, A.M., had his degree from the Univ. of St Andrews 21st March 1580, pres. to the Vicarage by James VI. 17th Sept. 1582. In 1588 Borgne was also under his care. After continuing another year he removed to the latter parish, but returned in 1594; was pres. to the parsonage and vicarage of Kirkchrist by his Majesty 30th Jan. 1601. He had also a gift from his Sovereign of an yearly pension of lxxxiii li from the kirklands and benefices in Galloway and Nithsdale 2d March 1603, for “at tymes bygane ryding and helping the Collector-General in ingathering and uplifting the fruits and rents of benefices in Galloway and Nithsdale."
