as " still labouring to keep the hearts of the people from the present government in Church and State." Criminal letters were directed against him 25th Jan. 1666 for holding conventicles, and also 15th Aug. 1667. He was included in the royal pardon 1st Oct. 1667. Orders was issued for his apprehension 4th June 1674, and 16th same month a reward of ijm merks were offered for his capture. He still continued his hazardous services in Cumberland and Northumberland, but afterwards fled to Ireland. Returning, he was in Wigtonshire a prescribed preacher in Oct. 1684, but was freed from further disquiet by his death at Edinburgh 31st March 1688, aged about 59, in 27th min. He marr. Katharine Cant, (who had sasine, with him, of the lands of Little-bogrie, Little-beoch, Breacko and pertinents in Nov. 1665), and had two daugh., Margaret, who marr. 1711. ALEXANDER MAITLAND, A.M., son of Mr William M., min. of Beith, obtained his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh 13th March 1695. He lived from infancy in the bounds, and was well known to be of blameless conversation; licen. by the Presb. 2d June 1702, called 8th Feb., and ord. (assist. and sue.) 7th Aug. 1711; died 19th March 1746, aged about 69, in 35th min. He marr. Agnes, daugh. of David Smart, glover, Kirkcudbright; she died 18th July 1767, and had three sons, David, Alexander, and William (from whom descended the Lords of Session Dundrennan and Barcaple), and two daugh., Agnes and Jean.-[Presb., and Syn. 1797. ALEXANDER Rocs, brother of the preceding, to whom he became assistant, pres. by Geo. III. 1st Feb., and ord. l0th Aug.; died 26th June 1806, in his 54th year and 9th min. Having leave from the Presb., he made a tour of the continent, principally on foot, and spent nearly two years in travelling through France and Italy. He was reputed a man of science, letters, and wit; and possessing a turn for practical mathematics, is said to have invented some ingenious contrivances about the loom.
