EDROM, OR ETHERHAM. Previous to the Reformation it belonged to the Abbey of Coldingham. The parish was supplied by JAMES COSTRANE, appointed reader at Beltyn 1570.
1574. PATRICK GALT OR GAITTIS, trans. from Abernethy; Dunse, Langtoun, Fogo, and Polwart were then also part of the charge, with a stipend of jc xxxiij li. vj s. viij d., and the kirk lands; continued in 1580, and removed to Dunse before 1582.-[Reg. 1646. JOHN HOME, trans. from Eyemouth, pres. by Charles I. 20th Aug; died in April 1648. The utencils, &c., were estimat at xx merks. “Debita excedunt bona." Janet Home, his relict, had a “house at Eyemouth bought with her awin money." They had a son John, whom he designed "to be brought up at the schooles."--[Reg. Sec. Sigill, rand Pres., Test. Reg. 1648. WILLIAM HOME, pres. by Charles I. 22d May; if settled he did not rest long undisturbed, as he was referred for trial at the visitation of Dunse and Chirnside by the Gen. 1649. THOMAS SVYNETOWNE, or SWINTON, A.M., trans. from Abbey St. Bathan's, he was a member of the Commission of Assembly 1649. He died in 1661, aged about 64. He marr. ANDREW BANNATIF, A.M., formerly of Garvald, pres. by Charles II. 25th May 1661, and 22d Feb., and 4th Oct. 1662, coll. 11th Nov. thereafter; again pres. by his majesty 6th March 1663, removed to Coldingham in 1665.-[Reg. 1665. ALEXANDER HEWAT, A.M., trans. from Coldingham, pres. by Charles Il. 17th Feb. 1664, coll. 3d Feb. thereafter; died in April 1677, aged about 46.
